초록

본 연구에서는 H. H. 언더우드의 『Modern Education in Korea』(조선의 근대교육)의 한국교육사 연구에서의 연구사적 의미 및 학술사적 의의를 살펴보고자 하였다.
H. H. 언더우드는 미국 북장로교회 파견의 선교사로 1934년부터 연희전문학교 교장을 역임하고, 미군정기에는 고문관으로 교육정책을 조언한 한국에서 태어난 선교사 2세이다. 1926년 뉴욕대학교에서 교육학 박사 학위를 받고 책으로 출간한 것이 『Modern Education in Korea』이다.
H. H. 언더우드의 『Modern Education in Korea』는 조선의 근대적 학교교육체제 도입 과정에서 선교사들이 수행한 교육활동을 정리하고 그 의미를 부각시킨 연구서로, 근대교육학적인 방법과 이론으로 연구된 최초의 우리나라 교육사 연구서로 평가받는 책이다. 하지만 선교사관에 입각하였고, 각종 자료를 사용하여 단순히 교육현황을 정리 기술한 책으로 비판받기도 한다.
하지만 H. H. 언더우드의 『Modern Education in Korea』는 선교사의 입장에서 또 1920년대의 조선 교육 연구 경향에 비추어 재고해 볼 필요가 있다. 출간 당시 『Modern Education in Korea』는 조선교육의 “능동적인 참여자”로서 그동안의 선교교육에 대하여 내밀하고 자세하게 정리하였고, 또 조선 교육 연구라는 새로운 분야를 개척했다고 평가받았다. 1920년대는 조선 교육에 대한 연구 관심이 제기되는 시기로서, 조선총독부의 교육정책을 대변하는 식민지 관료들의 역사적 연구가 나오고 있었고, 연구라기보다는 논설문에 가까운 조선인들의 저서가 출간되는 형편이었다.
H. H. 언더우드는 『Modern Education in Korea』에서 조선교육에 대한 전반적인 관점을 제공하고자 “관찰자”의 입장에서 조선총독부의 정책을 살펴보고, “능동적인 참여자”의 입장에서 조선에서의 선교교육을 정리하였다. 또 조선 정부와 조선인의 근대 교육 도입과 운영 노력도 다루었다. 결론에서는 “교육에서의 멋진 실험을 위한 실험실”로서 조선총독부, 선교사, 조선인 모두에게 다양한 기회가 있음을 제안했다. H. H. 언더우드의 연구는 선교 계획을 수립하기 위한 목적이었다 할지라도 한국 근대교육체제 형성에서 기독교계 교육의 역할에 대한 탁월한 사실적 연구로서 의미가 있다.

This study examines the historical and academic significance of H. H. Underwood's book Modern Education in Korea.
Underwood was a missionary with the Northern Presbyterian mission in America and served as the principal of Chosen Christian College from 1934 and as an educational advisor in the USAMGIK(U.S. Army Military Government in Korea). He obtained a Ph.D. from New York University in 1926 and published a doctoral thesis titled Modern Education in Korea.
Modern Education in Korea is a study of the educational activities of the missionaries and is considered the first research on Korea’s education history using modern educational methods and theories. However, it is based on a missionary’s view of history and has been criticized as merely arranging the state of education with several data. However, Modern Education in Korea needs to be reconsidered in the context of the contemporary situation and research trends of the 1920s. At the time of its publication, it was seen as a study of missionary education in Joseon by an active participant that broke ground in a new field—Korean Studies. In the 1920s, there were already some studies of the educational policies of the Japanese government, which were done under the influence of national academism by Japanese researchers in normal schools and at Keijo Imperial University, and by Koreans who had studied education both in Korea and abroad. However, these studies were devoted to the introduction of the Western educational theories and were less interested in the study of Korean education per se.
H. H. Underwood endeavored to provide a general understanding of Korean education from the viewpoint of a spectator and active participant. He looked at the policies and educational works of the Japanese government, surveyed missionary educational activities in Korea, and summarized Korean public and private education. He also proposed many opportunities for the Japanese government, Korean private education, and missionary education, suggesting that Korea could be a laboratory to experiment with education for all.
Although his research was aimed at mission education, Modern Education in Korea was an excellent piece of research on missionary educational activities and their role , and it opened the way for historical research on Korean education.
