미키 사카에의 연구와 생애를 통해 본 한일 의학 관계사 (The History of Korea-Japan Medical Relations: Through Miki Sakae’s Research and Life)

이 연구는 한국의사학자 미키 사카에의 삶과 그의 연구를 통해 한국과 일본 의사학의 관계성의 문제를 고찰한다. 미키가 식민지 한국에서 한 고의서(古醫書) 조사와 연구는 한국의학역사 연구의 출발이자 토대가 되었다. 그렇지만 ‘한국 의학의 역사를 연구한 일본인’이라는 특수성 때문에 그에 대한 연구는 그다지 적극적으로 이루어지지 못했다. 그의 연구의 핵심은 ‘한반도의 의학을 모르고서는 일본 및 중국의 의학을 이야기할 수 없다’는 것이었다. 이것은 일본 의사학계가 자국중심으로 의학의 역사를 이해하고 해석하는 것에 대한 도전이었다. 미키는 의학이 어떤 중심에서 다른 곳으로 퍼져나가는 것이 아니라 물이 흐르듯이 움직이고 섞이며 이를 통해서 새로운 것을 낳는다는 이해 아래에서, 한반도는 동아시아 의학의 흐름의 한 가운데에 있는 중요한 장소라고 위치 짓는다. 미키는 고래로부터 이어져온 한국과 일본 사이의 의학적 영향관계에 주목하는 것을 통해, 질병의 문제는 문화의 문제이자 사람의 문제라는 점을 파악하였다. 특히 한국의 감염병에 주목하여 한일 양국 간의 영향관계에 대해 증명하고자 했다. 미키가 일제강점기 한국에서 살았고 서양의학을 전공한 내과 의사였기에 한국의 전통의학의 문제에 대해 끝까지 추궁하지는 못했다는 한계가 있다. 그러나 패전 이후 일본의학계의 무관심 속에서도 한국 전통의학의 가치를 적극적으로 학계에 소개했고 의미 있는 자료를 남겼다. 이에 본 연구에서는 미키가 추구했던 한일관계사적 관점에서의 의학연구에 주목하여, 미키의 한국의학에 대한 태도의 변화, 미키가 연구한 한일 의학사에서 보이는 교류 양상 및 감염병의 전파 양상에 대해 살펴보고 있다.

영어초록

This study examines the life and research of Sakae Miki, a historian of Korean medicine, to explore the relationship between the study of medical history in Korea and Japan. Miki’s investigation and research on old medical books conducted in colonial Korea became the starting point and foundation for the study of the history of Korean medicine. However, due to the peculiarity of being ‘a Japanese who studied the history of Korean medicine,’ there was no sufficient research on him. The gist of his research can be summed up as: ‘You cannot talk about Japanese and Chinese medicine without knowing the medicine in the Korean Peninsula.’ This was a challenge to the Japanese medical history circles that tended to understand and interpret the history of medicine centered on their own country. Miki defines the Korean Peninsula as an important place in East Asian medicine, based on the understanding that medicine does not spread from one center to other places, but moves and mixes with other systems of medicine like water flows and creates new things through it. By paying attention to the medical interrelation between Korea and Japan, which had continued from the ancient times, Miki recognized that the problem of disease is a problem of culture and people. In particular, focusing on infectious diseases in Korea, he attempted to prove the influence and relationship between Korea and Japan. Since Miki lived in Korea during the Japanese colonial period and was a physician who majored in Western medicine, his study of traditional Korean medicine was rather limited. However, despite the Japanese medical community’s indifference after the defeat in the Second World War, he did his best to introduce the value of traditional Korean medicine to the academic community in Japan and left meaningful data to the future generations. This study focuses on medical studies from the perspective of the history of Korea-Japan relations that Miki pursued, and explores the changes in his attitude toward Korean medicine, the patterns of exchanges that is found in the history of Korean-Japanese medicine he studied, as well as the spread of infectious diseases.
