초록

본 논문은 한국과 일본의 싸리속 식물의 활용을 중심으로 양국이 동일 식물을 문화적으로 위치지어온 과정을 비교분석한다. 싸리속은 두 국가에 동일하게 자생하며 널리 활용되어온 민속식물이나, 한국은 용재용, 일본은 관상용으로 활용의 방향을 달리해왔다. 따라서 식물의 유용성을 결정짓는 데는 자생 여부를 넘어 다른 요인이 작용하고 있는 것으로 판단된다. 연구는 현대 양국에서 인식되는 싸리에 대한 상이한 이미지에서 출발하여 활용상을 달리해온 요인에 대해 다음의 내용을 살펴본다. 첫째, 싸리속에 대한 두 국가의 민속분류와 식물명을 통해 동일 식물을 인식해온 공통점과 차이점을 파악하다. 각국에서 판단하는 중요도에 따라 민속식물의 지위는 달라지며, 싸리는 대상식생이라는 점에서 자연환경과 주변식물에 의해서도 식물을 인식하는 기준에 차이가 생겨난다. 둘째 싸리의 유용성은 줄기에 집약되어 있으며 양국은 용도에 따라 줄기의 성질을 다르게 사용하고 있다. 줄기의 성질은 성장 시기에 따라 유연성, 직립성, 탄력성으로 구분할 수 있으며 어떤 성질에 주목하여 사용해왔는가에 따라 해당 식물에 대한 지식체계와 활용방식은 크게 달라지기도 한다. 셋째, 싸리를 지칭해온 양국의 명칭을 통해 일찍이 어떤 식물로 활용되었는가에 대해 검토하고 민속사례를 바탕으로 실용성 이면에 식물로서 싸리에 내포된 상징체계를 분석한다.
싸리는 두 국가에서 동일하게 부정을 막아주는 식물로서의 민속사례가 수집된다. 일본의 관상식물에서 비롯된 완상문화가 과거의 상징성과 함께 현대에 이르기까지 일부 전승되는 것과 달리, 한국에서는 범용적으로 활용됐음에도 용재로서의 가치를 잃으면서 일련의 상징체계도 빠르게 자취를 감춘 것으로 보인다. 일본에 전승되는 유용성과 상징성의 연관 관계를 통해 식물을 둘러싼 다층의 의미가 서로 무관하지 않음을 알 수 있다. 싸리는 민족에게 있어 과거 복합적인 식물로, 유형적 가치와 더불어 상징성이 투영된 중요한 식물이다. 본 연구는 한국의 민속식물로서 싸리의 상징성과 문화적 위치의 재검토를 위한 초석을 마련하고자 한다.

영어초록

This study compares and analyzes the cultural positioning of plants from the genus Lespedeza (commonly known as bush clover) in Korea and Japan, focusing on how both countries have utilized this plant differently. Lespedeza is a native plant in both nations and has been widely used as a folk plant, though Korea has mainly employed it for timber, while Japan has used it for ornamental purposes. This suggests that factors beyond its native presence play a role in determining the plant's utility. Starting from the differing perceptions of Lespedeza in modern Korea and Japan, this research examines the following factors that have shaped its utilization.
First, through folk classification and plant names, the study highlights similarities and differences in how each culture perceives the same plant. The status of a folk plant varies depending on its cultural importance, with Lespedeza classified as secondary succession vegetation, while the criteria for recognizing plants also differ due to natural environments and surrounding vegetation.
Second, the utility of Lespedeza is concentrated on its stem, and each country uses its stem properties differently depending on its purpose. The stem's properties can be classified into flexibility, erectness, and elasticity according to the growth stage. The knowledge system and methods of utilizing the plant vary significantly depending on which of these properties are emphasized.




Third, by examining the names used to refer to Lespedeza in both countries, the study explores how the plant has been historically used and analyzes the symbolic system embedded in the plant, based on folk practices. Lespedeza is recorded as a plant used to ward off evil in both Korea and Japan. However, while Japan has preserved part of the symbolic significance from the past through its ornamental culture, Korea, despite its extensive usage, seems to have lost much of the symbolic system along with the decline in its value as timber. The interconnectedness of utility and symbolism in Japan suggests that the multilayered meanings surrounding the plant are not independent of one another. Lespedeza was a complex and important plant for both countries, projecting not only tangible value but also symbolic meaning.
This study aims to lay the foundation for re-examining the symbolism and cultural significance of Lespedeza as a folk plant in Korea.
