일제시기 천도교 혁신세력의 ‘東道’주의와 종교⋅정치 활동 (The ‘Dongdoism’ and religious and political activities of Cheondogyo reformists during the Japanese colonial era)

초록

천도교 혁신운동은 3.1운동 직후 ‘중앙집권에서 지방분권으로’, ‘독재에서 중의로’, ‘차별에서 평등으로’의 방향 전환을 요구하였다. 이를 주도했던 혁신세력은 기본적으로 서양 근대문명에 대해 비판적인 입장을 견지하면서 동학적 전통을 계승하고자 한 ‘東道’주의적 인식을 보이고 있었다.
혁신세력의 ‘東道’주의는 우선 사상적으로 최시형의 事人如天에 기반하고 있었다. 즉, 천도교의 宗旨인 人乃天을 事人如天에서 발원하여 절대평등론으로 해석하고 이에 대한 사회적 실천을 모색하였다. 따라서 그들이 주도한 천도교 내 혁신운동은 교단운영과 관련해서 인내천주의의 제도적 실천을 위한 것이었다. 또한 만주 이주를 통한 자치공동체 건설 운동은 인내천주의를 기반으로 한 이상사회 건설을 위한 開闢운동의 차원에서 추진되었다.
다음으로 東道주의는 역사적으로 1894년 東學亂에 대한 강한 계승의식을 기반으로 하고 있었다. 이들은 동학 적통의식을 보이면서 동학란 당시 斥倭倡義論을 적극적으로 계승하여 항일운동에 적극 가담하였다. 특히 혁신세력의 중심인물인 최동희는 東學亂의 역사적 공적을 내세워 코민테른의 국제적 지원과 함께 통일전선체인 고려혁명당을 결성하여 항일운동을 위한 좌우합작을 모색하기도 했다.
이처럼 혁신세력은 절대평등론으로서 인내천주의와 함께 동학란의 역사적 공적을 공유하고 있었다. 이를 바탕으로 그들은 항일운동을 통한 민족해방 뿐 아니라 민족 구성원 모두의 평등이 보장되는 非자본주의 사회 건설을 궁극적인 목표로 삼고 있었다.

영어초록

Just after the March 1st Movement, the reformist movement of Cheondogyo demanded the changes of direction ‘from centralization to decentralization,’ ‘from dictatorship to popular opinion,’ and ‘from discrimination to equality.’ The reformist forces, which led this movement, showed the perception of ‘Dongdoism’ that intended to succeed to the tradition of Donghak, maintaining the basic position critical of Western modern civilization.
The ‘Dongdoism’ of the reformist forces was primarily based on Choi Si-hyeong’s ideology of Sain-yeocheon (事人如天, literally “Serve humans like heaven”). That is, it interpreted Innaecheon (人乃天, literally “Human equals god of heaven”), which is the creed of Cheondogyo, as a theory of absolute equality derived from Sain-yeocheon, and sought to put it into social practice. Therefore, the reformist movement within Cheondogyo led by them aimed to put Innaecheonism into institutional practice in connection with the operation of the religious order. In addition, the movement of constructing an autonomous community through immigration to Manchuria was promoted at the level of the Gaebyeok movement for the construction of ideal society based on Innaecheonism.
Next, the Dongdoism was historically based on the strong sense of succession to the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1894. Showing the consciousness of the direct heir to Donghak, the reformist forces actively adopted the theory of Cheok-wae chang-ui (斥倭倡義論, literally, “the expulsion of Japan and the raising of army in the cause of justice”), and engaged actively in the anti-Japanese movement. Particularly, Choi Dong-hui, a central figure of the reformist forces, sought a left-right coalition for the anti-Japanese movement, by forming the Revolutionary Party of Korea, a united front, with the international support of Comintern, insisting on the historical exploits of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
Like the above, the reformist forces shared the historical exploits of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, as well as the Innaecheonism, a theory of absolute equality. On the basis of this, they ultimately aimed at the construction of non-capitalist society where equality for all members of the nation was guaranteed, as well as national liberation through the anti-Japanese movement.
