초록

Euphoseunggang was implemented first in the late Shilla and early Goryeo periods by raising or degrading Eupho. Euphoseunggang in Joseon was carried out to organize the local administration system, but it was also for strengthening royal authorities and establishing the Neo-Confucianism order. A town was raised to reinforce royal authority and to demonstrate the authority of royal family and when there were meritorious deeds for the country. It was degraded when treason and Gangsang incidents occurred or residents were disloyal to the government and royal family. Sometimes the name of a province was changed because Gyesugwan degraded Eupho at the time of treason and Gangsang incidents.
265 Euphoseunggang cases were found to strengthen royal authorities and establish the Neo-Confucianism order. There were 74 cases of Euphoseunggyeok and 191 of Euphogangdeung. Euphoseunggyeok was enforced to reinforce royal authority and show the authority of the royal family from Taejo until Hyeongjong, while Euphogangdeung was enforced after treason to the government from the time of Taejong, lasting until Gojong.
Gangwondo had five cases of Euphoseunggyeok. Pyeongchanghyeon, Samcheokgun, Yangyangju were raised to Eooehyang; Yeongwol was elevated due to Neungchimji, Yicheonhyeon where the prince stayed was raised as well. There were sixteen cases of Euphogangdeung because of treason and Gangsang.For example, Hongcheonhteon, Wonjumok, Chuncheondobuho, Gangneungbu, Yangyangdobuho were the places where traitors were born or lived; Goseonggun was the place where public officials were murdered, Ganseong was the place masters were murdered; Wonjumok and Gangneungbu were the places where parents were murdered; Yicheonhyeon, Yangguhyeon, Wonjumok, and Cheolwonbu, Tongcheongun, Hoeyangbu were the places where husbands were murdered.
Gangwondo was named from 'Gang' of Gangneung and 'Won' of Wonju in the Joseon era. The treason and Gangsang against the government caused the province names to be degraded a lot in Gangneung and Wonju.
In the Joseon Dynasty, Euphoseunggang in Gangwondo was implemented to enhance the royal authority and to establish the Neo-Confucianism order. To show the strength and dignity of the royal family, Eupho was elevated. Eupho was demoted to dominate the local power and to lay the foundation of the Neo-Confucianism order. Finally, Euphogangdeung of Gangneung and Wonju, Gyesugwan, caused the province name of Gangwondo to be changed.
