한ㆍ일 동물지음 설화의 삽화구성 양상과 의미 (Aspect and Meaning of Episodic Composition in Animal Language Stories from Korea and Japan)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국과 일본에서 전승되는 동물지음 설화를 분석하여 설화의 기저에 자리한 설화향유자의 인식과 세계지향에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 한국과 일본의 동물지음 설화를 찾은 후, 이야기의 유형을 결정하는 필수삽화와 이를 중심으로 연결된 수의삽화의 양상을 살펴보았다. 분석한 결과는 다시 각 이야기의 전형 및 다른 나라 유형과의 비교ㆍ대조 과정을 거침으로써 양국의 설화적 특징을 보다 명징하게 도출해 내도록 하였다.
논의를 통해 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 한국의 동물지음 설화인 <새의 말 아는 사람>담과 <짐승 말 아는 며느리>담의 필수삽화는 비범한 주인공을 노정시키고 이인적 능력을 실제화함으로써 이어지는 삽화의 신뢰성을 높이고 주제전달의 강도를 증폭시킨다. 이러한 삽화의 이합에는 설화향유자인 상민의 바람이 투영되어 있다. <새의 말 아는 사람>담에서는 부패한 지배층에 대한 고발과 새로운 신분질서의 정립을 꿈꾸는 상민의 바람이 표출되어 있다. <짐승 말 아는 며느리>담을 통해서는 가부장적 질서하의 ‘아내’이자 ‘며느리’의 위상을 역전시킴으로써 새로운 가족질서를 향한 설화향유자의 희구를 읽을 수 있다.
둘째, 일본 <기키미미(聴耳)>담의 경우 설화의 주인공은 평범한 인물로 등장한다. 한국의 유화와는 달리 지음능력의 획득과정 및 ‘선행’ 및 ‘불심’에 대한 보상으로 ‘주보’라는 사물을 얻게 된다는 삽화의 등장이 특징적이다. 이를 통해 일본의 이야기에는 선인선과(善因善果)의 불교윤리가 흐르고 있음을 알 수 있으며, 설화향유자는 그러한 주인공을 통해 부의 축적과 신분상승이라는 욕구를 충족시키고 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
논의를 통해 같은 동물지음 설화라도 구성되는 삽화에 따라 서사의 지향점이 달라지고 있음을 확인하였다. 한국의 동물지음 설화에서는 비범성이 내재된 인물을 통해 새로운 세계질서의 변화를 도모한다. 일본의 동물지음 설화에서는 자비와 선행을 강조함으로써 평범한 상민도 이를 통해 행복에 이를 수 있음을 말하고 있어 한국의 유형과 다른 지향점을 보였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the recognition and world orientation of the storyteller located at the foundation of a story by analyzing animal language stories passed through generations in Korea and Japan. I have examined the aspect of essential episode determining the type of the story and the connecting episode centering that after collecting the animal language stories in Korea and Japan. The results were derived by analyzing the comparisons between the different types of stories and similar stories found in the other country to clearly define their characteristics.
Based on the discussion, there are several conclusions. First, an essential episode (referring to the person who knows the language of bird) in Korea enhances the reliability of the following episode to a higher level and amplifies the strength of the subject by realizing the uniqueness and dissimilarity of the main character from others. The connection of these episodes reflects the accusations against the corrupted ruling class through a unique main character and the desire of the common person dreaming for a new social status order.
Second, a unique main character, the daughter-in-law, is shown through necessary illustration and reveals the birth of the husband as the son of a Buddhist monk or indulges in material gain with her ability (who knows the language of animals) by the following illustration in Korea. This is pursuing a new family order by reversing the status of daughter-in-law under patriarchal order.
Third, the main character of the story appears as an ordinary character in the case of KIKIMIMI (Listening ear) in Japan. They get an object called treasure prayer as a reward of their good deed or faith in Buddhism and can become knowledgeable in animal language. Based on this, I recognized that it refers to Buddhist ethics of the results of good deeds in Japanese and confirmed that the transmitter of the story fulfills the desire to accumulate wealth and rise in status through the main character.
I confirmed that the direction of the narration is different according to the connected episode in the same type of story through the discussion. Korean animal language story pursues the change to the new world order due to a unique character. Japanese animal language story takes a different direction from that of Korean stories by emphasizing that an ordinary common person can achieve happiness with faith and good deed by strengthening them.
