초록

이 글은 강경애의 문학을 서사 층위의 명시적 언술에 근거하여 반페미니즘 텍스트로 규정하는 단순하고 도식적 비평방식을 문제 삼는다. 페미니스트 비평가들의 주장처럼 여성서사가 ‘또 다른 목소리’를 내장하고 있다면 여성성은 내용이나 주제 차원에서 ‘평가’되기보다는 텍스트 이면에서 ‘발견’되어야 한다. 그러므로 이 연구는 ‘여성적 글쓰기’라는 서술행위와 그 효과로서 균열과 틈새로 발화되는 ‘숨은 목소리’를 찾아 그것을 여성성이라 인정하는 작업이다. 이를 위해 작가 분신으로서의 서술자가 등장하는 그의 일인칭 서사 다섯 편을 분석하였다.
「원고료 이백 원」의 서술자는 가부장적 가치를 내면화한 비주체적인 여성으로 자주 해석된다. 그러나 그의 웅변적이고 확신에 찬 목소리에서 “이것이 애정일까”라고 묻는 냉소를 놓치지 않는다면, 그는 자기 삶의 주체로 독립하고자 하는 욕망과 그 불가능성이라는 모순 속에서 갈등하는 존재로 재해석될 수 있으며 페미니스트들에게 공격받는 이 소설이야말로 ‘감춰진 다른 목소리’의 존재를 강력하게 암시하는 여성적 글쓰기 표본으로 평가될 수 있다.
다섯 편의 서사에서는 모두 내/외-공간의 대립쌍이 발견되었다. 서술자는 두 공간의 사이에서 망설이는데 이를 상징적으로 구현해 보이는 것이 ‘질문’이다. 질문은 서사의 계기로 기능하지만 내/외의 경계에 선 서술자의 망설임과 혼란, 심리적 불안정을 대변하는 중요한 모티프가 되기도 하다. 「유무」와 「동정」은 그 경계의 공간의식과 망설임을 가장 잘 형상화한 서사이다.
강경애 일인칭 서술자는 실천을 유보하고 당위와 현실 사이에서 망설이는 자신에 ‘부끄러움’을 느낀다. 그것을 가장 극적으로 보여주는 것이 「산남」이다. ‘산남’은 모든 사회적 관계로부터 소외된 하위주체 서발턴의 원형적 모습으로, 작가는 자신의 공감 범위를 넘어서는 이 ‘이질적인 타자’를 재현하는 데에 이전 서사와 다른 서술방식을 시도하기도 한다.
일인칭 서사의 서술자 ‘나’는 ‘욕망하는 주체’이기도 하다. 「번뇌」는 모든 연구에서 내화 화자인 남성의 ‘번뇌’로 해석되었지만 페미니즘 비평의 독해를 통해 ‘숨은 목소리’를 발견할 수 있다면 서술자의 ‘번뇌’라는 것을 알아차리고, 그것이 조심스럽게 표현된 ‘나’의 성적인 욕망에서 비롯되었다는 것을 깨달을 수 있다.
페미니즘 시학은 재현하고 서술하는 젠더에 따라 소설의 미적 가치가 달라진다고 본다. 그래서 서술 내용 못지않게 서술자에게 주목한다. 강경애 일인칭 서사는 모두 자전적이고 자기 고백적인 서사로, 복잡하고 모순된 심리나 분열되고 흔들리는 서술주체의 심연을 드러내고 있다. 이는 삼인칭 서사가 해낼 수 없는 기능이며 왜 여성 글쓰기가 자전적인 형태로 수렴하는지 깨닫게 한다. 모든 일인칭 소설에 <나는 누구냐?>라는 질문이 함축되어 있다고 한다. 강경애 일인칭 소설 역시 남성이 주도하는 질서에 자신을 온전히 내줄 수 없어 정체의 분열과 불안을 겪었던 한 여성작가의 질문이라 할 것이다.

영어초록

This study takes issue with an oversimplified and schematic criticism method that defines Kang Kyung-ae's literature as an anti-feminist text based on her explicit speech at the narrative level. As feminist critics argue, if female narratives were to represent ‘another voice’, femininity should be ‘discovered’ rather than ‘evaluated’ or ‘publicized’. In this light, this study attempts to investigate the descriptive act of ‘feminine writing’ and the ‘hidden voice’ that, in effect of such, fires through cracks and gaps and recognizing it as femininity. Five first-person point of view works of literature by the author were analyzed wherein the alter ego of the author appears as narrators.
The narrator of Writer’s Fee of 200 Won is often seen as a passive, dependent woman who had internalized paternalistic values. However, if her eloquent and confident voice with which she asks the cynical question of ‘is this affection?’ is noted, she can be re-interpreted as a person in conflict fighting with the contradiction of her desire to be liberated as the driver of her own life and the impossibility thereof. In this light, this novel, which is frequently attacked by feminists, can be re-evaluated as an example of feminine writing that strongly implies the existence of a ‘different hidden voice’.
In all of the five narratives, internal/external-space confrontation pairs are found. The narrator hesitates between the two spaces, and the most representative symbol of such hesitation is presented in the form of ‘questioning’. Questioning not only serves as a starting point of the narrative, but also as an important motif representing the hesitation, confusion, and psychological instability of the narrator who stands at the border that divides the two spaces. Such borderline spatial consciousness and hesitation are best exemplified in Yu-mu and Sympathy.
The first-person narrator of Kang feels ‘ashamed’ at his or her constant hesitation on the border. The most dramatic example is represented in Man in Mountain. The mountain man is the prototype of sub-subject subaltern, and the author deviates from her previous narrative method in reproducing this ‘the other’ that goes beyond her own scope of sympathy.
At the same time, ‘I’, the narrator of the first-person narrative, is also the one who desires. While Pain has consistently been interpreted to refer to the pain of the man who is the internal speaker, if a hidden voice can be found through feminist reading, the meaning of pain can be expanded to mean that of ‘I’, the narrator, which derived from her sexual desire that is cautiously expressed.
Feminist studies view that the gender that reproduces and narrates is one of the factors that determines aesthetic value of literature, and focus on the narrator as much as what is being narrated. Kang Kyung-ae’s first-person novels are all autobiographical and confessional, revealing her complex and contradictory psychology and the divided and shaken abyss of the subject. This is an effect that a third-person narrative cannot achieve and at the time the reason why female writing ultimately converges into an autobiographical form. All first-person narratives are said to be essentially an inquiry of ‘who am I?’ Kang Kyung-ae's first-person novels are also a question of a female writer who suffered from identity division and anxiety because she could not fully give herself up to a male-dominated order.
