조선 지식인의 琉球 체험과 인식 (Experience and Perception of Ryuku by Joseon’s Intellectuals)

초록

조선 지식인의 유구에 대한 체험은 넓지도 깊지도 못했다. 유구 땅을 직접 밟아 본 지식인은 몇 명 되지 않는다. 유구사신이나 유구인을 직접 만난 경우도 그리 많다고 할 수 없다. 조선의 관료 및 지식인들이 유구에 대해 체험하고 인식을 키울 수 있었던 통로는 ①외교문서 ②조선에 온 유구 사신단과의 대화 ③유구에 갔던 사신에 의한 전언 ④북경에서 유구 사행단과의 대화 및 관찰 ⑤조선에 漂着한 유구인의 진술 ⑥유구에 표착했다가 송환된 조선인의 진술 ⑦1-6번의 내용들을 기록한 문헌들을 통해서이다. 먼저 ①외교문서를 통해서 조선은 유구를 交隣의 관계로 보고자 하였으나 결국 조선과 유구는 明과 淸의 책봉국가로서 敵禮的 교린관계였으며, 실질적으로는 중국에 의해서 조선이 유구보다는 한 등급 위의 대접을 받았다.
나머지 경우에서 조선 지식인이 체험하고 인식한 유구는, ‘작고 먼 나라.’ ‘장사하는 나라.’ ‘조선보다는 실력이 낮은 나라.’ ‘중국을 중심으로 하는 한자문화권에 속해 있는 나라.’ ‘예를 아는 풍속이 순박한 나라’ 정도이다. 그리고 유구의 문화, 풍속, 제도 등에서는 ‘조선과 많이 닮았다.’라고 인식했다. 이를 이덕무는 ‘세상에서 일컫는 말’이라고 하면서 ‘유구는 작은 조선’이라는 한 마디로 정의하였다. 이는 당시 조선 지식인의 유구에 대한 인식을 압축한 말이다.

영어초록

It is indeed that Joseon’s intellectuals barely experienced Ryuku in terms of breadth and depth. Few of them took their step into the soils of the kingdom. Also, it was rare that they met up with envoys or natives of Ryuku. However, there were several things or ways that allowed governmental officials or scholars of Joseon to experience Ryuku and form even a little bit more perception of it. Those things or ways included ①diplomatic documents, ②conversations with Ryuku’s state mission to Joseon, ③messages from envoys that Joseon dispatched to the foreign kingdom ④conversations between Joseon and Ryuku’s delegations in Beijing, ⑤statements from a few locals of Ryuku who were drifted off and reached the shores of Joseon, ⑥statements from a few locals of Joseon who were after having been floated away to Ryuku, and ⑦written records regarding the above items 1 to 6. In some detail, diplomatic documents that this study put as the foremost means to experience and perceive Ryuku imply that Joseon had just a friendly neighboring relations with the foreign kingdom. On one hand, Joseon and Ryuku were reciprocal and equal to each other in a sense that both of them had their monarches officially installed by the Ming(明) and then the Ching(淸) dynasties. But actually, the Chinese nations put Joseon right above Ryuku from a perspective of hierarchy.
With the other means, this study found, Joseon’s intellectuals seemingly experienced or perceived Ryuku as a country that is ‘small and distant’, ‘trading goods’, ‘less capable than Joseon’, ‘belonging to the sphere of Sino-centric Chinese Characters Culture’ or ‘has politeness and innocent customs’. Some of the intellectuals regarded that Ryuku had ‘a lot of resemblance to Joseon’ in terms of culture, customs and institutions. This response was noted by Lee Deok-mu(李德懋) as ‘the world is referring to in that way’. He defined that ‘Ryuku is little Joseon(小朝鮮)’. This definition is the most proper compact version of perception that Joseon’s intellectuals had about Ryuku at the time.
