초록

이 논문은 한국전쟁기 민간인 학살 유해발굴 유적을 고고학적으로 검토한 연구이다.
한국 사회에서는 2000년 이후 한국전쟁기 민간인 학살사건과 관련된유해발굴이 급증하였다. 이 시기에는 국가기관이나 지자체가 유해발굴사업을 주도하기 시작하고 고고학자, 인류학자, 법의학자 등 다양한 전문가들이 발굴조사에 적극적으로 참여하게 되면서 체계적인 유해발굴 보고서 등 관련 자료의 생산도 증가하게 되었다.
유해발굴 결과는 각 지역에서 발생했던 민간인 학살사건의 실체를 확인해 준다. 그리고 여순사건 관련 민간인 학살 사건, 형무소 재소자 및 국민보도연맹원 학살사건, 부역혐의자 학살사건, 군경 토벌작전에 의한 민간인 학살사건 등 다양한 학살 유형의 특징을 어느 정도 뒷받침 해준다. 한편 유해발굴을 통해 확인된 물적 증거들은 민간인 학살이 발생했다는단순한 사실을 넘어 당시의 권력관계가 어떻게 희생자들을 죽음에 이르게 했는지에 대한 과정을 실체적으로 구성할 수 있게 해준다.
유해발굴 유적에 대한 고고학적 검토를 통해 대상 유적과 관련된 민간인 학살이 사회를 통제할 수 있는 상위 권력에 의해 자행되었음을 이해할수 있다. 그리고 가해 세력은 많은 수의 사람을 비교적 신속하게 그리고 효율적으로 살해하고 은폐하려고 했었다는 사실도 추론할 수 있다. 발굴자료를 통한 이러한 추론은 다른 문헌 및 증언 등과 함께 실재적으로 구성될 수 있다.
이번 연구에서 다룬 유해발굴 유적이 한국전쟁기 민간인 학살의 전부를 보여주는 것은 아니다. 유해발굴 사업은 복잡하게 얽혀 있는 과거와현재의 이해관계 속에서 비교적 큰 규모의, 잘 알려지고, 잘 남아있는 유적에 집중될 수밖에 없었다. 이러한 현상은 전쟁과 같은 특수 상황 속에서 발현될 수 있는 다양한 인간 행동 양식들을 입체적으로 파악하는 데방해가 될 수 있다. 따라서 유해발굴과 관련된 연구를 진행할 때는 특정성격의 유적에 유해발굴 조사가 집중되는 현상과 그것에 얽혀있는 복잡한 사회적 관계들도 함께 고려할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This paper is an archaeological review of the exhumation of the remains of the massacre of civilians during the Korean War.
In Korean society, the exhumation of remains related to the massacre of civilians during the Korean War has increased rapidly since 2000. During this period, state agencies and local governments began to lead the exhumation of remains, and various experts such as archaeologists, anthropologists, and forensic scientists actively participated in the exhumation and the production of related data such as systematic exhumation reports also increased.
The results of the exhumation of the remains confirm the reality of the civilian massacres that occurred in each region. In addition, to some extent, it supports the characteristics of various types of massacre, such as the massacre of civilians related to the Yeosun Incident, the massacre of prisoners in prison and Kukmin-bodoyeonmaeng(the federation for protecting and guiding the public), the massacre of the collaborator, and the massacre of civilians by the operation of subjugating the military and police.
On the other hand, the physical evidence identified through the exhumation of the remains makes it possible to substantially construct the process of how the power relationship at the time led to the deaths of the victims beyond the simple fact that the massacre of civilians occurred.
It can be understood that the massacre of civilians related to the target ruins was carried out by the superior authority in control of society through archaeological review of the remains of the exhumation. It can also be inferred that the perpetrators tried to conceal and kill a large number of people relatively quickly and efficiently. This reasoning from the exhumation data can be practically constructed along with other literature and testimony.
The remains of the exhumation covered in this study do not show all of the massacre of civilians during the Korean War. The exhumation of remains was bound to focus on relatively large-scale, well-known and well-remaining remains in the complicated interests of the past and present. This phenomenon can interfere with the three-dimensional grasp of various human behavior patterns that can be expressed in special situations such as war. Therefore, when conducting research related to the exhumation of remains, it is necessary to consider the phenomenon in which the investigation of remains is concentrated on the remains of a specific nature and the complex social relationships entangled in them.
