카프 영화인 서광제의 전향 논리 연구 (The study on The Logic of Conversion : In The Case of Seo, Gwangjae, KAPF Cineaste)

초록

본고는 일제시대 영화평론가로서 카프 계열에서 활동하다가 이후 최초의 친일영화인 <군용열차>(1938)의 감독을 했을 뿐 아니라 많은 친일 협력의 글들을 발표하였고, 실제로 신념에 찬 친일협력자의 길을 걸었던 영화 평론가의 전향 논리에 관한 연구이다. 이 연구에서는 서광제의 그러한 친일 협력 행위를 밝히는 한편 그 행위가 나오게 된 사고의 변화라는 맥락에서도 찾고자 하였다. 또한 이러한 점들은 그를 전향케 한 일제의 사상동화 정책과의 관계 속에서 서술되었다. 서광제는 카프 영화인이면서도 신흥영화예술가동맹을 만들어 카프와는 일정한 거리를 두었고, 주류 영화인들과도 거리를 둔 모호하게 고립적인 지위에 속했던 인물이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 당대 최고의 평론가로서 많은 평문을 작성하였고 현실 속에서도 일정한 영향력을 발휘하였다.
그가 친일 협력의 길을 내딛게 된 첫 번째 이유는 일제의 무자비한 탄압과 그 탄압에 대응할 현실적 힘을 갖지 못한 당대 엘리트들의 처지에서 비롯된 것이었다. 하지만 36년이라는 긴 세월의 일제 강점 특히 일본의 만주사변과 청일전쟁 승리라는 상황에서 피식민지 운동가와 지식인들이 논리적으로 굴복하거나 타협했다는 요인 또한 무시 못 할 큰 이유이기도 했다. 그 논리란 바로 ‘신체제론’과 이를 사상적으로 뒷받침하는 ‘동양론’과 그 전략이라고 할 수 있는 ‘동화일체론’ 등이었다. 서광제는 일본의 중국전 승리를 보면서, 또 파리가 나치에 의해 함락되는 것을 보면서 현재의 무기력을 극복하는 동시에 ‘조선의 자치’가 보장될 수 있는 ‘동양론’과 ‘동화일체론’ 그리고 ‘신체제론’을 적극적으로 수용하였고 또 누구보다 앞장서서 실천하였다. 하지만 이는 제국주의의 지배 논리인 ‘동화와 차별’의 순차적 적용에 의해 결코 이루어질 수 없는 백일몽이었다. 좌익 영화인이었던 그가 전향을 하게 된 것은 이런 큰 흐름 외에도 당시 영화계의 열악한 구조를 개선하고, 개인의 사회적 생명을 유지하기 위한 노력과 함께 이루어졌다. 그것은 바로 ‘기업화론’이었다. 이 논리는 그 자체로는 이념적으로 무색무취한 것일 수도 있지만 ‘신체제론’ 등과 어울리면서 친일 협력의 길을 걷는 매개체가 되기도 했다. 이런 맥락에서 서광제는 최초의 친일영화 <군용열차>(1938)을 감독하게 된 것이다.
본고에서는 서광제의 이러한 행보를 논리적으로 이해하기 위해 전향에 대한 선행 연구를 하였고, 당시 조선 문예인들의 행적 속에서 또 강점 정책의 변화라는 큰 틀 위에서 살펴보고자 하였다. 그럼으로 역사와 개인의 관계, 국가라는 집단과 개인의 관계, 정치와 예술의 관계에 대해 간접적으로나마 객관적으로 이해하고자 하였다.

영어초록

This is the study on the logic of conversion of Seo, Gwangjae who is the predominant film Critic in the Japanese colonial period, Active KAPF Cineaste, later makes the first pro-Japanese movie <Military Train> (1938). He changes his direction from KAPF to pro-Japanese film critic and writes numerous pro-Japanese writings. The Emphasis is not just to criticize his pro-Japanese cooperation action itself, but to have better understanding of the context of the individual’s inherent and a Japanese policy of assimilation in changing his stand.
As an individual, there are the historic contexts and personal traits for his standing against a national pride and right to live of the nation. Seo, Gwangjae, Active KAPF cineaste, is the person who is encountered the open criticism from KAPF for organizing ‘the new movie artists alliance confederation’ and keeping the distance with KAPF. On the other hand, he criticizes mainstream movie artists and withdraws from them by himself put a distance with them by himself. He maintains a dubiously isolated attitude. Nevertheless, As a critic of the day, he makes out tremendous critical writings on film and has the influence on the society of the artists.
What makes him toward the pro Japanese cooperation is the cruel oppression of the Japanese Imperialism and situation of the powerless colonial elites of the day. Besides, there is the factor that makes the anti-colonial activists and the intellectual‘s Submission and compromise with the Japanese imperialism. It is the oppressive but conciliatory logic of the Japanese imperialism, which lasts over 36 years and wins the victory of Manchurian Incident and the Sino-Japanese War.
The logics are ‘the new film system’ and ‘Oriental idea’ which support ideologically ‘the new film system’ and ‘assimilation’ as a strategy. While witnessing the Japanese victory over China and Paris has fallen by Nazi, He thinks that only way to overcome current our people’s powerlessness and secure ‘the autonomy of Chosen’ is the active acceptance of ‘Oriental idea’, ‘assimilation and ‘the new film system idea’ And he is in the lead of realization of the ideas. However, this was daydream, which can never be realized by the consecutive application of ‘Assimilation and discrimination’ that is the control logic of imperialism.
The Conversion of the leftist cineaste is not only because of this tremendous stream of times but also because of his purpose of improving of the poor condition of Korean film society and keeping his individual's social life. This is the ‘movie enterprises theory’ This logic by itself is the ideologically colorless and odor-free. But, with ‘the new film system’, It provides the path of the pro-Japanese collaboration. In this context, Seo, Gwangjae directs the first Korean made pro- Japanese movie <military train> (1938).
To understand his changing direction logically, I studied prior research on conversion and I examined his move with the larger framework of chasing the track of Korean writers and artists of the day who confront conversion and the change of Japanese colonial policy. So that, before we brand pro-Japanese collaborators and converters in the Japanese occupied period as ‘traitors’, I try to understand indirectly but objectively the relationships between history and an individual, ‘Nation’ as a Group and an individual, arts and politics.
