전후의 풍속과 전쟁 미망인의 서사 재현 양상 -염상섭의 <미망인>·<화관> 연작을 중심으로 (Afterwar manners and Aspect of war widow narrative representation -Centering on serious by Yum-Sangsup)

초록

본고의 목적은 전후의 풍속과 전쟁 미망인의 존재론적 지위의 서사 재현 양상을 살펴보려는 것이다. 풍속이란 복합적이고 다층적인 경험 세계의 영역에서 구체적으로 지각되는 삶에 대한 인간의 사고 방식 및 태도라 할 수 있다. 그래서 소설 텍스트에 재현된 풍속은 작중인물들이 자신의 욕망을 표현하고, 욕망의 실현을 플롯화한다는 점에서 단순한 관습․습속․인습․습관․전통과 구분된다. 그것은 작중인물의 욕망과 서사 전개의 동기화를 제공해 주는 소설적 관습이자 소설 구성의 필수 조건인 셈이다. 이러한 시각을 바탕으로 본고는 염상섭의 <미망인>․<화관> 연작에 나타난 남성 정조론의 모순적 성격과 전후 전쟁 미망인의 존재론적 양상에 대하여 살펴보았다.
전후의 풍속은 전쟁 미망인과 유엔마담, 전쟁 고아, 댄스홀, 남성 정조론과 관련을 맺고 있는데, 본고는 특히 전쟁 미망인의 재혼 및 사회 참여의 문제와 맞물려 있는 남성 정조론의 모순적 성격을 논의의 핵심으로 삼았다. 그것은 자각적인 남성주체의 의식과 행위의 분열을 상징적으로 보여주고 있을 뿐만 아니라 전쟁 미망인의 사회 경제적 활동을 지배․통제하는 법칙이기도 하다. 그것에 의해서 명신(영숙)의 행위는 선한 행위로 평가되고 선택적 인물(허용)로 형상화되며, 금선(봉순)의 행위는 악한 행위로 평가되고 배제적 인물(금지)로 형상화된다. 하지만 그것은 <미망인>에서 가부장적 질서의 비판적 준거틀로 사용되다가 <화관>에 이르러 그러한 기능은 상실된다. 여기에는 성모랄의 위기를 가부장적 질서의 붕괴로 인식했던 1950년대 남성 정조론의 논리가 숨겨져 있다. 따라서 남성 정조론과 전체 서사 구도를 고려해볼 때, 금선(봉순)은 불순한 타락의 이미지로 극화되고, 명신(영숙)은 순결한 정절의 이미지라는 상대적인 가치를 획득하게 된다.
또한 <미망인>․<화관> 연작의 유엔마담으로 재현되고 있는 전후의 풍속은 전쟁 미망인의 재혼과 타락, 생존과 의식 사이의 모순, 남성 정조론의 인식과 실천의 양가성, 가부장적 여성 타자의 시선과 가치 판단 등이 복합적으로 중첩되어 있는 양상을 띤다. 이러한 전쟁 미망인의 존재론적 맥락과 관련지어 생각해볼 때, 전후 사회의 다층적인 존재자들의 모습과 그들의 삶의 관념을 다양하게 그리고 있는 두 소설 텍스트는 단순한 통속소설이나 세태소설로 규정될 수 없을 것이다.
그럼에도 불구하고 염상섭이 「소설과 현실」에서 의도하고 있듯이, 두 작품에서 교화주의적․도덕주의적 성격이 지나치게 강조되고 있다는 측면은 작품의 한계로 지적되지 않을 수 없다. 왜냐하면 그것이 독자로 하여금 작중인물들에 대한 작가의 평가 가치에 대해서 신뢰할 수 없도록 하는 효과를 산출하기 때문이다. 그것은 전쟁 미망인의 부정적 행동이나 태도에 대해서는 가차 없이 비판을 가하지만, 그러한 인물과의 관계 지속을 자기 합리화나 자기 변명의 수단 정도로 생각하는 남성주체의 행동과 의식에 대해서는 비판의 날을 거의 세우지 않는다. 작중인물에 대한 이러한 서술상의 평가․판단 가치는 염상섭의 다른 작품들과의 연속성을 토대로 좀더 세밀하게 고찰될 필요가 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the afterwar manners and aspect of war widow narrative representation. The manners is one’s way of thinking or an attitude about lives, which is concretely percepted in the complex and plural realm of the experience world. Therefore represented manners in the novel texts are differed from simple customs, practices, conventions, habits in that make characters express their desire and emplot the realization of their desire. It is a novelistic convention as well as an indispensable condition, which supply to the motivation of characters’s desire and narrative development. On the basis of this standpoint, this thesis examined about male’s sense of virtue which has a contration and the existential aspect of afterwar war widows in Mimangin(『未亡人』)․Whakwan(『花冠』) novel of series by Yum-Sangsup.
Afterwar manners related to war widows, U.N.madams(Korean girl caters to American soldiers), war orphans, dance hall, male’s sense of virtue. This thesis especially takes notice of male’s sense of virtue which has a contration by the point of discussion, which is related the marriage matter and social participation of war widows. By that, the action of ‘Muangsin(Youngsug)’ is appreciated as good action and then is figurated as selective character(permission). Also the action of ‘Gumsun(Bongsun)’ is appreciated as bad action and then is figurated as exclusive character(prohibition). But male’s ambivalent sense of virtue is used to critical frame of reference about patriarchal order in the novel of Mimangin(『未亡人』), whereas it get lost such a function in the novel of Whakwan(『花冠』). Here lies close that the logic of male’s sense of virtue in 1950’s cognizes the crisis of sexual moral as a collapse of patriarchal order. Hence in considerating male’s sense of virtue and narrative construction as a whole, ‘Gumsun(Bongsun)’ is dramatized as impure depravity image and ‘Muangsin(Youngsug)’ acquires relativistic value of pure fidelity image.
Also in Mimangin(『未亡人』)․Whakwan(『花冠』) as novel of series, afterwar manners which is represented as U.N.madam shows an aspect of complexly being piled up, which has relation with war widow’s marriage and depravity, contradiction between survival and consciousness, ambivalence of awareness and practice about male’s sense of virtue, patriarchal woman other’s gaze and her value judgment and so on. In having relation with such a war widow’s existential context, aspect of the multiple beings in afterwar sociality and two novel texts which variously describes the ideas of their life not will be prescribed by simple popular novel or trivial the novel of manners.
Nevertheless like his intention in「Novel and Reality」, the characterization of enlightenment and moral is overemphasized by Yum-Sangsup in the two novels, which is to point the limitation of two works. Because it produces effect that makes reader to distrust about author’s value judgement. It severely criticizes to war widow’s dishonest action or her attitude, whereas man subject regards duration with which has relate such woman character as the means of self rationalization or self excuse. His action and consciousness is not criticized by narrator or author. This narrational estimation and value judgement about character is very concretely considerated on the basis of consistency which relates Yum-Sangsup’s other works.
