초록

『인간인(人間人)』 은 이청준의 인간관과 역사관을 선명하게 드러내는 중요한 텍스트다. 『인간인(人間人)』 의 형식을 논할 때 가장 먼저 지적할 점은 이 소설이 상편과 하편으로 이루어진 2부작이라는 사실이다. 이 소설의 사건들은 속세에서 멀리 떨어진 깊은 산중의 사찰 일대를 배경으로 하고 있으면서도 당대의 시대적·사회적 상황과 밀접한 연관성을 갖고 전개되는데 이는 불도의 세계와 세속 간에 벌어지는 변증법적 갈등과 상호침투라는 테마로 발전한다. 『인간인(人間人)』 에서 이러한 역설과 아이러니의 구조는 반복과 대칭의 기법을 통해서 거시적인 범위는 물론 미시적인 범주에 걸쳐 텍스트를 치밀하게 직조하는 역할을 담당한다. 이는 소설 전체를 양분하는 1부와 2부 간의 관계뿐만 아니라 각 부를 구성하는 세부적인 사건들에도 두루 적용되는데, 이 과정에서 텍스트의 형식 층위와 내용 층위를 두루 결정하는 텍스트성이 발생된다.
『인간인(人間人)』 은 1부와 2부의 이야기 속에서, 각각의 주인공이 여러 사건을 거쳐 변모하고 마침내 ‘주체’를 생성하는 단계로 나아가는 과정을 형상화하고 있다. 이는 자아가 주체로 변모하기 위해 필수적으로 거쳐야 하는 ‘소외(aliénation)’와 ‘분리(séparation)’의 과정에 각각 해당된다. 이들은 자아가 존재결핍을 극복하기 위해 반복적인 시도에 의해 도달하게 되는 변증법적인 단계이며 이를 통해 독자는 주체 형성 과정이 소설의 텍스트성의 주제와 형식을 결정하는 데 밀접하게 관련된다는 사실을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

Lee Chung-jun wrote the novel Inganin from 1983 to 1991. Inganin is the important text showing Lee Chung-jun's view of human, history, and the world distinctively among his many lifeworks. Nevertheless, researchers have paid attention to that novel compared with Lee Chung-jun's other works. While analyzing Inganin’s form, we should focus on its two parts. Especially it is characteristic that the second part of the novel is not the succession but the repetition of its first part. The two stories of the novel have the symmetrical form from the topological view of narrative. The two parts of Inganin have the similar narrative structures in which two main characters with violent nature and worldly desire undergo dramatic changes as various types of men realizing their feebleness and powerlessness The events of this novel are set in the temple in Haenamgol, a remote place from the mundane world, but at the same time, they have been closely connected to the social and political situations of that era, which have developed the theme of the dialectical agon and interpenetration between the worlds of the secular and spiritual divisions. The structure of paradox and irony has the role of weaving the novel’s texture through the technique of repetition and symmetry from the microscopic to macroscopic dimension, which could be applied not only to the relation between two parts of the novel but also among the detailed events comprising of each part. In this process, the novels textuality itself has been produced which decides the forms and contents of that text.
While reading and decoding the unique textuality of Inganin’s based on repetition and differences, readers directly arrive at the question about the very nature of humanity and history. The structure of Inganin embodies a series of processes of alienation and separation. Going through these stages, the main characters experience critical changes and eventually reach the level in which they can become subjects, the dialectical stages which an ego should suffer to supplement the lack within him/herself. The double system of Inganin, the structure based on at once the sameness and the difference embodies the nature of both human communities and individual histories simultaneously.
