해방기 문학과 지성인으로서 문학인 (A Study on the Literature and the Intellectuals during the Liberation Period)

초록

본고는 해방기라는 정치체제 변동기의 상황에서 당시 사회개혁과 변동의 원천적 힘이었던 지식인으로서 일정한 역할을 담당하였던 문학인들의 작품을 통하여, ‘비판적 지식인 내지 지성인’으로서 문학인의 역할을 재조명해 보았다. 문학인들은 미소 군정의 영향권 아래에서 우리 민족만의 고유한 정체성을 회복하려 한 지성인으로 기능하면서 ‘비판적’이고 ‘보편적’인 시각에 바탕하여 ‘선택’의 순간에 주류에 편입하지 않는 비주류의 주변인, 즉 ‘경계인’이 되었다. “언제나 주변을 향해 이동”하는 경계인에게 있어 당시의 ‘집중화되는 권위’는 사회주의와 자유민주주의였으며 ‘주변을 향해 이동’한다는 것은 신식민지 상황에서 탈식민지의 욕구, 정체성 확보와 관련된 문제였다. 분석한 바에 따르면, 정치적 행보를 고려하지 않았을 때, 문학인들은 자신의 내면이 암시적으로 드러날 수 있는 실제 작품 내에서, 지성인으로서의 대사회적 커뮤니케이션을 비판적으로 행사하였다. 그래서 끊임없이 민족의 정체성 모색에 ‘열중’하여 ‘주체화’에 노력하거나 민족적 정체성 때문에 ‘흔들리’면서 우리의 아픔을 ‘보편적’인 인류의 고통으로 확장 승화시켰다. 이는 미소군정 자체를 또 하나의 식민현실로 인식 탈식민지화를 촉구하고 통일을 향한 민족적 염원, 나아가 세계평화로까지 진전되는 소중한 의미들이다. 여기에 정치적 변동기 문학인들이 작품을 통하여 추구하고자 열망하였던 재현적 지성인, 경계인으로서의 모습이 놓인다. ‘균형’적 시각을 잃지 않고 우리만의 ‘다양성’을 ‘재현’해 내려 했던 문학인들의 독특한 시대적 모습에 의의가 있었다.

영어초록

This study set out to look into the roles of the writers and their works in the aspect of national(ethnic) identity by investigating them and their works together. During the liberation period of Korea when the political systems were abruptly changing, the writers served as the source of the social reform and transformations as the intellectuals. The writers were the real critical voice of the times when the Korean people were under the military administration of the U. S. and the Soviet, trying to restore the unique national identity of Korea. Unlike those who had the critical and universal point of views and tended to enter the mainstream in the moment of 'choices,' the writers that 'represented' as the true intellectuals during the liberation period were the marginal men standing outside the mainstream. In this study, the traces of the writers' desire for postcolonialism and struggles for the national(ethnic) identity were searched for as they worked hard to fulfill their roles of the true intellectuals. They understood that the military administration of the U. S. and the Soviet was the new colonial state and showed their understanding through their writing motives. Those works depicting the peasants' resistance were also 'focusing' on the recovery of the national(ethnic) identity. In terms of the structure, the searching efforts for the national(ethnic) identity took the critical forms of self-scorn or failure. Their 'representation' as the intellectuals became much more apparent with the 'internal shaking' of the main characters of their stories, who were also intellectuals. According to the analysis results, the writers who formed the intellectual group during the liberation period, as well as their works were highly critical. When their political activities were not considered, it was understood that they exercised their right as the intellectual class, which was to criticize the social communications of the times harshly in their works where their inside was elaborately suggested. Really, they are marginal man and the intellectual of representation.
