초록

《聊齋志異》에서 《醒夢駢言》으로의 ‘재창작’에는 서사형식과 서사구조 및 주제의식의 변화도 있지만, 무엇보다도 분명하고 구체적인 차이점을 보이는 부분은 ‘서사내용의 변화’이다. ‘서사내용의 변화’에는 다양한 특징이 나타나는데, 대체로 ‘부연(敷衍)’, ‘축소(縮小)’, ‘확대(擴大)’, ‘변환(變換)’, ‘첨가(添加)’, ‘삭제(削除)’ 등의 현상이 보인다. 만약 ‘다름’의 광범위한 틀에서 살펴보면, 원작의 내용을 그대로 이어받아 묘사하는 ‘답습’도 이런 변화의 확장된 범위 안에 포함된다고 할 수 있다. ‘변용’의 대척점에 있다고 할 수 있는 ‘답습’은 원작의 내용을 비교적 그대로 이어받은 ‘같음’의 특징을 가지고 있고, ‘변용’은 원작의 내용을 다르게 바꾸는 ‘다름’의 특징을 가지고 있다. 하지만 이러한 ‘같음’과 ‘다름’은 서로 대립되고 충돌하는 것이 아니라, 오히려 상대를 반영하고 포용하는 것이라고 말할 수 있다. 원작의 내용을 그대로 계승하거나 유지하는 서사적 특징인 ‘답습’과는 달리, ‘변용’은 원작의 내용을 예술적으로 다르게 재현하는 서사적 특징을 가진다. ‘변용’의 관점에 치중하여 내용을 조정하는 서사방식에는 인물이나 사건이 뒤바뀌거나 완전히 새로운 인물이 등장하거나 혹은 생소한 내용이 부가되기도 한다. 이러한 ‘서사적 변화’를 적극 운용하는 기법에서 ‘부연(敷衍)’, ‘축소(縮小)’, ‘확대(擴大)’, ‘변환(變換)’이 있다. 이와 같은 방식을 적극 운용하는 과정을 ‘변화의 시작 단계’라고 할 수 있는데, ‘변화의 시작 단계’에는 인물을 포함한 등장인물의 수, 인물의 행동과 인물의 심리 변화도 있고, 서사관점, 묘사대상, 내용순서, 서술주체의 변화도 있으며, 편폭이나 이야기의 확대 혹은 축소의 특징을 보이기도 한다. ‘변화의 시작 단계’라고 볼 수 있는 ‘서사내용의 변화’에는 원작의 기본 골격을 그대로 유지하면서 같은 듯 다르게 내용을 묘사하고 있는데, 이것은 소위 저자의 ‘서술 책략’ 혹은 ‘서술 계획’하고도 관련이 있다. 기존의 내용을 표면적으로 유지하면서 독자에 대한 대응과 시대적 흐름을 반영하고, 사회 문화적 요구와 변화를 작품 내용에 적절하게 표현해내려는 의도를 가지고 있다. ‘변화의 완성 단계’에서 보이는 것처럼 단순하면서도 직접적인 운용 수법보다 교묘하면서도 치밀하게 서사 기교를 변용하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 서사내용의 변화 과정을 복잡하면서도 유기적으로 얽어 놓아 높은 서사적 예술성을 드러냄과 동시에 다양한 내용적 변화를 통해 작품 내용을 보다 더 입체적으로 바꾸어 놓았다.

영어초록

In reproduction of Yojaejiyi(聊齋志異) into Seongmongbyung-eon(醒夢駢言), it is true that the form and structure of narration and the theme change, but the most obvious and definite change appears in the ‘contents of narration’. The ‘change in contents of narration’ can be characterized in various ways, but largely there are ‘amplification’, ‘reduction’, ‘expansion’, ‘conversion’, ‘addition’, and ‘deletion’. When looking at ‘difference’ as a broad sense, ‘following’ the original work could be included into the expanded range of change. Considered to be at the opposite side of ‘transformation’, ‘following the original work’ has a characteristic of ‘being identical’, while ‘transformation’s characteristic is ‘being different’. However, such being ‘identical’ and ‘different’ do not conflict, but rather they reflect and embrace each other. Unlike ‘following the original work’, which is a narrative characteristic that inherits or maintains the original contents, ‘transformation’ has a narrative characteristic of reproducing the original contents in an artistically different way. In the narration method that modifies the contents from the aspect of ‘transformation’, a character or an event changes, a totally novel character appear, or a unfamiliar content is added. Among the techniques that actively utilize such ‘narrative changes’, there are ‘amplification’, ‘reduction’, ‘expansion’, and ‘conversion’. The procedure in which such methods are actively used can be described to be ‘the beginning of the change’. In ‘the beginning of the change’, there appear changes in the characters and their numbers, actions, and minds ; changes in the points of view, targets of description, orders of the contents, and the subjects of narration; or expansion or reduction of the quantity or story of the work. The ‘change in contents of narration’, which can be considered to be the ‘beginning of the change’, maintains the fundamental structure of the original work as much as possible, so that the description of the contents is similar but still different, and this is related to the author’s so-called ‘narration strategy’, or ‘narration planning’. While maintaining the original contents at superficial level, the author intends to reflect the reactions to the readers and trends and to include the sociocultural needs and change into the contents appropriately. The narration techniques used here are transformed both simply, as in ‘the beginning of the change’, and more carefully and skillfully than the techniques applied directly. Additionally, by arranging the change in narrative contents complexly and organically, the author shows high narrative artistry, and at the same time, he/she changed the contents of the work more multi-dimensionally through a variety of changes in the contents.
