초록

네덜란드의 역사학자 요한 하위징아(Johan Huizinga)는 호모루덴스라는 개념을 내세워 인간을 유희하는 존재로 파악했다. 하위징아는 『호모루덴스』에서 인간이 다른 동물과 구별되는 본질이 바로 놀이를 하는 점에 있고, 문화는 놀이에서 생겨난 것이라고 주장했다. 놀이 정신이야말로 문화발전을 가능하게 하는 풍부한 창조력을 지닌 약속의 원천이라는 것이다. 그런 의미에서 볼 때 소설 속 변신 존재는 가변적 세계 속에서 타자와 관계를 형성하며 새로운 세상을 창조해 나가는 흥미진진한 놀이의 주체가 된다.
『聊齋志異』 속 변신 존재는 새로운 신체를 부여받아 타자의 삶에 개입하고 사건을 전개시키며 또 다른 삶을 체험한다. 몸의 변형을 통해 타자와 마찰을 일으키고 긴장과 화해를 경험하며 내면의 진솔한 가치관과 세계관을 드러낸다는 점에서 새로운 사회문화적 의미와 해석을 부여받을 수 있다. 본고는 『聊齋志異』 속 인간과 비인간의 교류에서 ‘변신’이라는 모티프가 관계 형성에 주요 원동력이 되었음에 주목하여 다양한 인간 군상에 대한 삶의 경험을 창조적 ‘놀이’의 관점에서 접근하고자 했다.
『聊齋志異』 변신 존재들은 자의적인 선택으로 몸을 변형하여 일탈의 즐거움을 만끽하고, 경계를 허물어 탈경계적인 소통의 유희를 즐기며, 물리적인 시간을 재구성하면서 결핍된 것을 보상받는다. 변신은 인간 안에 내재하는 동물이나 식물 등 비인간적인 특징을 이끌어내고 인식하는 메타포로 작동한다. 변신 서사는 자아의 정체성을 회복시키면서 이상적 자아를 창조해 가는 과정을 담아낸다. 근원적인 욕망과 현실적 결핍 사이의 균열을 채워주고 억압에서 벗어난 자유로운 삶을 즐기게 해 준다. 그런 의미에서 자아의 결핍을 극복하고 타자와 상생을 꿈꾸는 변신 서사의 뿌리는 생태적 상상력에 있다. 『聊齋志異』 변신 서사는 인간 이외의 것들을 소외시키지 않으려는 노력, 상생의 가능성을 문학적 유희로 재현해 낸다.

영어초록

Dutch historian Johan Huizinga used the concept of homoludence to identify humans as playful beings. In Homorudens, Huizinga argues that the essence that distinguishes humans from other animals lies in playing and that culture arises from play. In other words, the spirit of play is the source of the rich creativity that enables cultural development. In that sense, the novel’s transformative ability is the subject of exciting play that can create a new world through the formation of a relationship with the other in a variable world.
The transforming being in Ghosts and Wizards (『聊齋志異』) is given a new body and then intervenes in others’ lives, drives events, and experiences another life. A new socio-cultural meaning and interpretation can be given in that the being causes friction with others, experiences tension and reconciliation, and reveals its true inner values and worldviews through bodily transformation. This paper attempts to approach various human groups’ life experiences from the perspective of creative play, noting the motif of transformation as a major driving force in the exchange between human and nonhuman beings in Ghosts and Wizards (『聊齋志異』).
The transforming beings in Ghosts and Wizards (『聊齋志異』) are rewarded for their deficiencies by being able to transform their bodies according to arbitrary choices. They are then able to enjoy the pleasure of deviating from each other as well as play facilitated by borderless communication and the breaking down of boundaries and can even reconstruct physical time. Transformation works as a metaphor that draws out and recognizes inhuman characteristics, such as those of animals and plants, that are inherent in humans.
The transformation narrative contains the process of creating an ideal self and restoring the self-identity. It fills the gap between underlying desire and the lack of reality and allows individuals to enjoy a life free from oppression. In that sense, the roots of the transformation narrative, which overcomes the lack of self and dreams of coexistence with others, lie in the ecological imagination. The transformation narrative of Ghosts and Wizards (『聊齋志異』) reproduces the possibility of coexistence through literary play in an effort not to alienate nonhuman things.
