This paper tried to analyze the shape and characteristics of heroines in Strange Stories From Chinese Studio(『聊齋誌異』). The late Ming and early Qing was a period in which women’s suicides increased exponentially as the concept of fidelity was strengthened. I tried to deal with the progressive women's shapes and characteristics, which were not noticed due to the existing uniformized research on perception of women during the Ming and Qing period, when rites and female virtues were emphasized.
In this paper, a heroine is defined as a woman who breaks out of the androcentric world view in which women have no choice but to play a passive and subordinate role, demonstrates their abilities and talents, and leads and pioneers their own lives. Among them, the analysis was divided into women with excellent academic and literary skills, women with excellent commercial and economic abilities, and courageous women with a sympathetic temperament. It is possible to explore how the perspectives to emphasize the progressive and self-directed identity as a human being, free from forced femininity, are arranged and narrated.
The achievements of research on the shape of female characters in Strange Stories From Chinese Studio have been accumulated considerably. However, most of the researches on the shape of female characters are focused on the motifs such as free love and second-rate love between male and female. Also, the ideological nature of Po Song Ling(蒲松齡), who resisted feudal rites that suppressed human’s true emotions, has been intensively studied, mainly limited to women who pursue free love. This paper tried to reinterpret the ideological world of Po Song Ling through the analysis of the subjective female figure, who criticizes pretentious behavior by demonstrating outstanding talents and abilities, away from the motifs of second-rate love and free love. The unique shape of heroines drawn by Po Song Ling clearly shows the author’s resistance, anger, and rebuke against the inflexible ideological concept and feudal rites in the socio-cultural traditions and customs of the early Ming and early Qing period.
