The renewal and dynamism of the Church depends on holy, charismatic, well-motivated and well-trained priests. As the priests share the life and mission of Christ, the eternal high priest of the new covenant, so adequate formation of the future priests to take over and continue this mission is highly required. Formation is an art, a long and continued journey in which the principal and indispensable protagonists are the Holy Spirit, the candidate and the formator. Priestly formation takes all three working together, in a full and harmonious way. This journey proceeds through different stages towards its ultimate goal which is the integral formation of the future priests. Since the contextual realities, where the priests will exercise their ministries, have enormous influence so these realities are to be taken into consideration in the formation process.
Realizing the utmost importance of the priestly formation the Church, in different times, has issued various documents containing its teachings in the forms of instructions, guidelines and orientations to facilitate the priestly formation work encouraging the entire Church to get involved in it. The Church’s teachings present programs for the holistic view of formation covering various areas or dimensions, namely, human, intellectual, spiritual and pastoral formation of the future priests. These important pillars hold strongly up the life and ministry of the priests.
Development of all the faculties enables the candidates to be mature, integrated and committed persons, and helps to prepare them as servants, leaders, teachers, preachers, proclaimers of the truth of the Gospel and sanctifiers of all humanity. Following the self-sacrificing love and example of Christ the high priest, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the assistance of the formators, the future priests learn to take seriously upon their hands the responsibility to form themselves resembling the mind, heart and spirit of Christ, and to become truly the men of God and of the Church, and as such, the signs of communion, ministers of reconciliation and men of effective dialogue with other people and the reality of people’s situation showing mercy of the God and expressing total solidarity with them.
