익산지역 백제유적의 평기와 특징과 변천 (A Study on Plain Roof tiles of Baekje sites in the Iksan Province)

초록

백제 사비기 수도였던 부여와 대응되는 익산의 역사적인 성격을 밝히기 위해 익산지역에서 출토된 백제시기 평기와를 집중분석하여 검토하였다. 평기와의 각 속성을 본격적으로 분석하여 검토함으로써 익산지역 백제 유적의 평기와의 성격과 특징을 종합적으로 파악하려고 하였다. 또한 이를 토대로 백제 한성기․웅진기․사비기 중앙과 지방지역의 공통점과 차이점을 밝히고, 이를 통해 기와의 변화와 발전에 대하여 짚어 보았다.
먼저 왕궁리유적, 미륵사지, 제석사지, 제석사 폐기장, 연동리유적, 저토성산성, 석왕동유적, 신동리유적, 원수리유적 등 익산지역에서 평기와가 출토된 9개 유적의 특징을 검토하였다.
평기와 속성 중 문양, 태토, 와통의 종류, 단철흔의 유무 및 너비, 와도분할, 하단 내면 조정, 단면조정 등의 변화하는 양상을 확인하였다. 이것을 토대로 익산지역 평기와의 특징을 Ⅰ기와 Ⅱ기로 구분할 수 있다. Ⅰ기의 시기는 6세기 후반부터 백제 멸망 전후이며, 신동리유적, 원수리유적, 제석사 폐기장, 석왕동유적이다. Ⅱ기는 백제 멸망기 전후부터 700년을 전후한 시점으로 백제시대 말기와 통일신라시대 초기로 볼 수 있다. 유적은 미륵사지와 연동리유적 등이 해당된다.
Ⅰ기에서 Ⅱ기로 변화하는 평기와 제작기법 중 태토, 단철흔, 와도분할, 하단 내면 조정, 단면조정에서 큰 차이가 확인된다. 이것은 제작과정 중 공정이 생략되는 특징에서 보이는 것으로, 변화의 1차적인 요인은 기와의 대량생산으로 생각해 볼 수 있다. 부여지역 뿐만 아니라 익산지역에서도 경영을 위한 다양한 성격의 유적들이 집중되어 축조되면서 왕궁 및 사찰, 산성, 분묘 등 다양한 곳에 대량의 기와가 필요했을 것이다. 이러한 필요에 의해 기와는 이전의 백제시대 제작 기법의 전통을 유지하면서 제작과정에서 시간을 단축하는 작업을 통해 변화해 간 것으로 볼 수 있다.
익산지역과 부여지역의 평기와는 문양과 와도분할 등 일부 차이가 확인되지만, 그 밖의 제작기법에서는 괘를 같이하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 또한 익산지역과 부여지역에서 출토되고 있는 대부완이나 전달린토기 등의 토기류, 그리고 익산 왕궁리유적의 대형건물지와 관북리유적의 대형건물지 등의 공통된 양상이 확인된다. 이러한 양상은 평기와의 제작기법에서 보이는 긴밀한 관계와 상응하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 익산지역은 다른 지방지역과는 달리 중앙의 부여지역과 유사한 성격을 가졌던 것으로, 평기와에도 이러한 익산지역의 위상이 반영된 것으로 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

I focus an examination on plain roof tiles those are excavated around the Iksan province where is another center during the Sabi period of Baekje. In comparison with plain roof tiles of each time, I attempted to identify the then political, social and cultural aspects.
First of all, I examined 9 sites in Iksan province– Wanggung-ri site, Mireuk-temple Site, Jeseok-temple site, Yeondong-ri site, Geummadotoseong earthen fortress, Seogwang-Dong site,Shindong-ri site and Wonsu-ri site - where were unearthedplain roof tiles, and I arranged distinguishing characteristics of already discussed sites. Also I examined attributes which were occurred from manufacturing process of plain roof tiles, and they can be divided into formal and technical attributes. As a result, the manufacturing techniques of plain roof tiles in Baekje period lasted from 660(after the collapse of Baekje) to 700 years or so.
I figured out many attributes of plain roof tiles, and I can confirmed aspect of transition – patterns, caly, sorts of Roofing tile mold, existence and width of Danchul trace, direction of roof-tile cutting, modifying lower part of inner side, modifying cross section- . Through those analysis, I classified characteristic of plain roof tiles in Iksan province as 2 phase.
The phase Ⅰ is from late 6th century to around the time of Baekje`s collapse, and Shindong-ri site, Wonsu-ri site, Jeseok-temple graveyard site and Seogwang-Dong site are included in this phase. The phase Ⅱ is from the time of Baekje`s collaps to 700 years or so, that is the end of Baekje period and the early period of unified SIlla. The main sites of this phase are Mireuk-temple Site and Yeondong-ri site.
I ascertain the main differences among clay, Danchul-trace, direction of roof-tile cutting, modifying lower part of inner side and modifying cross section which can be seen as process of changes from the phase Ⅰ to phase Ⅱ in manufacturing of plain roof tiles. I can check those differences from skipping the process along the manufacturing, it can be thought that the primary cause for changes is mass production system. In sabi period of Baekje, different kinds of sites mainly focused on composition in Iksan province as well as Buyeo province to manage the country(Baekje kingdom). Therefore heavy demand for roof tiles must be needed to establish royal palaces, temples, fortresses and tombs ans so on. According to these demands, there would have required a shorter time for manufacturing processes, even if keeping the tradition of the previous period.
There are many similarity in manufacturing techniques of the plain roof tiles between Iksan and Buyeo province, except patterns and direction of roof-tile cutting. Those similarity between two provinces can be observed in ‘sutdy cases’ ofconvex eave-end roof tiles, stamped-roof tiles, potteries : the pedestal bowl and the extended rim bowl, and a large building site in wanggung-ri site and Gwanbuk-ri site. These cases between Iksan and Buyeo provinces are closely connected with manufacturing the plain roof tiles.
It is a noteworthy fact that even though Iksan province is not the center during sabi period of Baekje, Iksan province is a major hub unlike other local areas. Through the plain roof tiles, I can confirm the statue of Iksan province in sabi period of Baekje.
