Because the Jews were waiting for the Messiah, who would appear as "the son of Abraham and David," as foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament, Matthew begins his Gospel with a Jewish genealogy to connect Jesus to the prophecies of the Messiah’s Jewish ancestry for his Jewish readers.
God promised through his covenant with Abraham that Abraham's descendants would become "a great nation," and through his covenant with David, He promised "an eternal kingdom." These covenants made with Abraham and David were fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who came as the "son of Abraham and David." Jesus Christ, through the blood of the cross, gathered the spiritual descendants of Abraham as the people of the new covenant, forming a "great nation." He also established the kingdom of God, the eternal Davidic kingdom, for them and reigns over it. The essence of the kingdom of God is that it is the kingdom where Christ reigns; the people serve him, and Christ protects and guides them.
Matthew concludes his Gospel with the Great Commission, given by Jesus Christ, the son of Abraham and David, as He ascended to heaven: "Go and make disciples of all nations". By ending his Gospel in this way, Matthew was urging the Jews to participate in making disciples of "all nations" and by doing this, making them into the people of Christ, in other words, the "sons of Abraham." Therefore, the purpose of this study is to share that Matthew's message is given to all descendants of Abraham, and that Christians, as spiritual descendants of Abraham, along with the church as spiritual Israel, must carry out the task of bringing "the blessing of Abraham to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus". It is only by faithfully carrying out the Great Commission of Christ that they truly become "God's missionary people" and a "missional church."
