Jerusalem in Acts from the Perspective of Zion Theology of Isaiah

초록

This study is an attempt to explore the double attitude to Jerusalem (or the Temple) in the book of Acts in an effort to clarify the theological meaning of the Jerusalem Temple in Acts. There are two perspectives toward Jerusalem in Acts: a positive and a negative perspective. One of the positive aspects of Jerusalem as presented in Acts is the account that Apostles gathered in Jerusalem to receive the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.
On the other hand, however, the speeches of Stephen and Paul in Acts drew a negative picture of Jerusalem. More specifically, Stephen quoted Isa 66:1-2 to criticize the Jewish practices around the Jerusalem Temple (Acts 7:49-50). With regard to this double attitude to Jerusalem, there is a diversity of scholarly opinions.
After surveying such diverse scholarly opinions, this study has come up with an alternative approach to the seemingly contradictory attitudes toward Jerusalem in Acts. In other words, this study has proposed that the issue of the double attitude can be resolved by attending to the dual concept of Zion in Isaiah. In the book of Isaiah, the picture of Zion was presented in a two-fold way: the physical Jerusalem which will be restored after the exile and the eschatological Jerusalem as a universal city where the Holy Spirit will be poured out in the eschaton (Isaiah 32-33).
Old Testament quotations in Acts concerning Jerusalem are concentrated in the book of Isaiah, thereby indicating that Acts is closely related to the book of Isaiah in terms of Jerusalem. Acts made further modifications to the Zion theology of Isaiah in such a way that the Christian community where the Holy Spirit dwells with the word of God may serve as a new Temple of divine presence in the eschaton in continuity with the Jerusalem of the OT .
