일응스님 범패의 융합적 세계 (The Harmonic world of Buddhist Ven Ileung's chants)

초록

본고에서는 일응스님의 삶과 그의 음악 세계를 탐구하기 위하여 일응스님께 범패와 작법을 배우거나 일응스님과 함께 재식 활동을 한 승려들을 찾아 경향 각지를 다니며 증언을 녹취하여 이루어졌다. 이로써 일응스님의 범음성이 어떻게 성숙되고 발전되고, 그것이 어떻게 전승되었는지 알 수 있었고, 나아가 일응스님의 범패가 한국 불교음악의 지역적 특성들과 어떻게 상호 작용하고 있는지, 민간음악과 어떤 관련성이 있는지도 알 수 있었다. 한 승려를 통하여 이와 같은 다양한 연구 결과가 도출 될 수 있었던 것은 그의 삶이 그 만큼 다양한 여정을 지니고 있기 때문이다. 전주 출신으로 완제 범패를 익힌 후에 서울의 동교파와 서교파를 오가며 경제 범패를 익혔고, 한 때는 승려가 아닌 국악인으로서 시조창 활동을 하며 가야금산조와 북 가락을 익히다가 다시금 승려로 되돌아와 서울에서 중요무형문화재 제50호 작법보유자가 되었으나 이후에는 전주와 광주 익산 등지에서 후학 양성에 주력한 것이 그것이다.
1년여에 걸쳐 현지조사와 증언과 일응스님 범패 음원을 악보로 채보하여 음악적 특성을 분석한 결과, 일응스님 범패에는 경제 범패로 인한 정제된 음정과 세련된 가락을 지니면서도 호남지역의 향토적인 성음이 각 악곡에 용해되어 있었다. 높은 고음으로 올라갈 때는 간혹 가성을 쓰기도 하는데 이는 시조창의 영향으로 보이며, 화청에서 자유자재로 장단을 타고 넘나드는 범패 가락은 가야금산조와 북가락과 같은 민간 한국 전통음악의 영향으로 보인다. 이로써 일응스님 범패의 특징은 지역을 뛰어 넘는 성격과 한국 전통 음악의 기법을 자신의 범패 가락으로 활용하는 융합적 세계에서 찾을 수 있다. 주목할 것은 민간의 음악 기법을 불교음악으로 수용하면서도 절제되고 무게감을 잃지 않는 점이 일응스님 범패의 가장 큰 덕목이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This thesis is a study on the process of characterizing and hand down of a monk's chants Beompae(梵唄) through Ven Ileung's life on the condition of Korean Buddhist society and tradition. For this study, I met his students and colleagues whole area of Korea and recorded the evidences. After that I recorded his songs on western music notation and analysed it.
Ven Ileung was born on 1920 in Jeonju of Jeolla province, died on 2003 in Seoul. That days on Korea history was the convulsions period under Japan's colonial rule , before and after Korean war, so Buddhist monks should be experienced their fragmentation. Ven Ileung became a monk 1931(his age was 11) learned and exercised the songs and dancing in the Buddhist ritual, it was Woanje style of the Jeolla province. After 5 years he went to Seoul to learn Geonggi style chants for his advanced song. At one time, He return to secular society to escape from the fragmentation of Buddhist monk's society and school. At that time he acted as a singer of Sijo a kind of Korean traditional lyric song also learned Gayagum(Korean 12 stringed Zither) Sanjo and the rhythm of drum.
After several years, he came back to be a monk and harder to exercise Buddhist ritual song and dancing for ceremony service then before. The result he could get the accredit as his songs and dancing and became a initiator of the Korea important intangible cultural property No 50 in Seoul. After that He went to his home town Jeolla province and instruct his students Buddhist ritual and song and dancing. By his effort his students could became initiators of Jeolla province intangible cultural property.
The analysis of his various chants is that some time there were falsetto voice on high pitched melody, it is came from Korean traditional lyric song Sijo. Some time there were a vocalization like Jeolla province fork song mostly on low pitched melody, it is due to his home town jeolla's fork song style. But his song is more purified and collected the pitch and interval of his melody then his students and colleagues in Jeolla district, it is because of that he learned and acted in Seoul. Especially when he song Hoacheong, song very delicate emotionally and express rhythmically, it is influenced by Gayagum Sanjo and Korean traditional rhythm pattern of drum.
Given his life, acting of Buddhist ritual and 10the feature of his Buddhist song Beompae, the character is in the fusion and harmonious condition with Seoul and region, the religious sprit and layperson music. The noteworthy on his songs is the temperance of emotional expression and dignified vocal although receptive of the common musical skill. It is the most virtue on his songs.
