조선후기 상인 조직의 인원 구성과 변동: 저산팔읍 상무우사의 사례 분석 (Understanding the Traditional Community of Peddlers and Stallholders: An Empirical Case Study of the Eight Ramie Producing Counties)

초록

이 논문에서는 저산팔읍 상무우사의 『청금록』을 집중적으로 분석하여, 19세기 후반의 인원 구성과 변동 실태에 접근하고자 하였다. 『청금록』은 비록 방명록 또는 출석부 성격의 자료로서, 조직의 전체 인원을 포괄하는 명단이라고 하기는 어렵지만, 분석의 유용성을 확보할 수 있다.
저산팔읍 상무우사는 봇짐장수인 ‘보상’의 조직이지만, 단순한 행상보다는 좌고의 단체라고 이해될 수 있다. 이러한 특성은 『청금록』에 기재된 전호(廛號)를 통해 확인할 수 있으나, 장기에 걸쳐 전호의 연속성이 확인되지는 않는다. 직책 명칭의 변화와 인원수의 변동을 통해, 조직의 성격이 1880년대에 들어 단절되었음을 알 수 있다.
저산팔읍 상무우사가 당대의 충청남도에서 가장 큰 규모를 자랑하는 조직이었음을 새롭게 밝힐 수 있었다. 또한 1880년대에 들어 새롭게 유입된 인원은 본래부터 정해져있던 승진 절차나 관례와 관계없이 새로운 직책을 부여받았으며, 이는 순수한 상인이 아닌 자들이 중앙조직과의 관계나 정치적 이해관계 등을 고려한 부차적 이익을 노리고 참여하였기 때문으로 해석되었다.
구성원이 『청금록』 상에 출현하는 빈도나 근속연수 등의 수량 지표를 통해 분석한 결과를 통해, 멤버십이 상당히 느슨하였다고 볼 수 있으며, 공동체에 대한 소속감 역시 부실하였을 가능성이 높음이 지적되었다. 이와 같은 특징은 멤버 상호간의 처벌을 규정한 사항이 1855년 이후로 확인되지 않는다는 점을 통해서도 지지된다.

영어초록

Previous studies on the organization of peddlers in late Chosŏn Korea did not provide sufficient evidence‒based analysis. In this paper, Ch’ŏnggŭmnok of the peddlers’ community in the Eight Ramie Producing Counties was analyzed intensively to approach the actual management of peddlers’ organizations in Ch’ungch’ŏngnam province in the late 19th century. Ch’ŏnggŭmnok is not without the usefulness of the analysis, although it is difficult to call it a list covering the entire number of people in the organization, as data in the nature of the guest book or attendance book.
The peddlers’ community in the Eight Ramie Producing Counties was an organization of ‘peddlers’, but it is hard to say that it was an organization of ‘real’ peddlers, as is commonly understood, and it was also understood as a community of stallholders. These characteristics can be inferred from the stall names listed in Ch’ŏnggŭmnok. However, the continuity of stall names over the long term is not confirmed, and this can be seen through quantitative analysis of the number of members. The nature of the organization seems to have been changed from the 1880s, as can be seen by the change in the official titles and the change in the number of people.
In this paper, it was clarified that the peddlers’ community in the Eight Ramie Producing Counties was the largest organization of merchants in Ch’ungch’ŏngnam province at the time. In addition, in the 1880s, the newly introduced personnel were given new positions regardless of the originally set promotion procedures or practices, as nonmerchants participated in the community for secondary interests in consideration of their relationship with the central organization or political issues.
Therefore, it is highly likely that the membership was quite loose and that the sense of belonging to the community was also poor, unlike what had been understood previously, as shown by the analysis of the quantity index such as frequency of entry and participation duration on Ch’ŏnggŭmnok. This feature is also supported by the fact that the provisions for the punishment between the members have not been found since 1855.
