초록

1126년 송나라는 북방 금나라의 갑작스러운 침공으로 수도가 함락되고 두 황제가 생포되는 정강의 변을 당하였다. 이후 즉위한 송고종은 방위선이 무너진 상태에서 남쪽으로 계속 도주하였고, 그 과정에서 양주와 명주 등지에서 몇 차례나 금군의 추격에 붙잡힐 절체절명의 위기상황을 겪어야 했다. 이런 경험으로 인해 송고종은 방위선의 붕괴가 국가와 자신의 안위에 치명적이라는 것을 깨닫게 되었고 북변 방위선의 복구와 유지를 위해 온 힘을 쏟게 되었다.
남송의 애국명장이자 중화민족의 민족영웅으로 추앙받고 있는 악비는 가난한 소작농 출신으로 군공을 세워 재상의 지위에까지 올라간 입지전적인 인물이었다. 금나라의 침공을 방어하기에 급급했던 남송에서 악비는 처음으로 성공적인 반격작전을 주도하여 경호지역을 회복하였고 이 공으로 악비는 북변 방위를 담당하는 지역방면군의 사령관의 지위에 오르게 된다. 그 후로 악비는 4차례의 북벌을 성공시키면서 남송군의 금나라에 대한 공세를 주도하지만 그 내막을 살펴보면 악비의 군사적 거동은 위험한 돌출행동들이 적지 않았고 당시 남송군의 역량으로서는 감당하기 어려운 것이 많았다. 특히나 악비는 무리하게 전과를 확대하다가 다른 남송군과 협조하지 않고 군대를 과도하게 돌출시켜서 남송의 방어선을 무너트릴 수 있는 위험에 자주 노출되었다. 때문에 방어선 유지를 최우선과제로 삼았던 송고종의 방위구상과 서로 갈등관계에 놓일 수밖에 없었다.
1140년 금이 화의를 깨고 다시 남침을 해오자 악비는 중원으로 북진하였고 중앙정부의 철군 명령도 무시한 채 전선을 무리해서 확대하였다. 다른 방면군들이 모두 철수하는 상황에서 악비군은 하남지역에 고립되었고, 금군의 공격을 받아 전군이 궤멸될 위기에 놓였지만 유기의 도움을 받아 간신히 철수할 수 있었다. 이듬해 남송의 지역방면군들은 중앙정부의 명령에 따라 서로 연계하여 금군을 자고진전투에서 패퇴시키면서 군벌들로 이루어진 지역방면군들이 중앙의 명령에 따르는 체계를 회복하였다. 이런 상황에서 중앙의 통제에 따르지 않고 돌출행동을 하는 악비의 거동은 군사적으로 예측할 수 없는 위험요소가 되었기 때문에 조정은 악비를 제거하게 되었던 것이다.

In 1126, the Song Dynasty was invaded by the Jin Dynasty from the north, and the capital was captured, with two emperors being captured, which was called Jingkang incident. After ascending to the throne, Song Gaozong fled southward with the defense line in a state of collapse, and in the process, he faced several life-threatening situations in which he was chased by the Jin army in places such as Yangzhou and Mingzhou. As a result of this experience, Song Gaozong realized that the collapse of the defense line was fatal to the country and his own safety, and poured all his efforts into restoring and maintaining the northern defense line.
Yue Fei, who is revered as a patriotic hero of the Chinese people, was a figure who rose from a poor tenant farmer to a high-ranking official. In the desperate situation of defending against the Jin Dynasty’s invasion, Yue Fei led a successful counterattack for the first time and regained the Jing-hu area, and with this achievement, he was promoted to the position of commander of the regional army responsible for the northern defense line. After that, Yue Fei led four successful northern expeditions and led the Southern Song army’s offensive against the Jin Dynasty, but upon closer inspection, Yue Fei’s military actions involved many dangerous and unexpected actions, and there were many things that the Southern Song army could not handle at the time. In particular, Yue Fei expanded his military achievements excessively and often exposed himself to the risk of breaking through the defense line of the Southern Song by inordinately deploying his troops without cooperating with other Southern Song armies. As a result, he was inevitably in conflict with Song Gaozong’s defense plan, which prioritized the maintenance of the defense line.
In 1140, when the Jin Dynasty broke the peace and invaded the South again, Yue Fei marched northward to the Zhongyuan region, ignoring the central government’s withdrawal orders, and expanded the front line by force. In a situation where all other regional armies withdrew, Yue Fei’s army was isolated in the Henan area, and although the entire army was in danger of being destroyed by the Jin army’s attack, he was able to withdraw with the help of Liu Qi. The following year, the regional armies of the Southern Song, following the central government’s orders, cooperated with each other to defeat the Jin army in the Battle of Zhegaozhen, and the Southern Song goverment recovered the system of following the central government’s orders. In this situation, Yue Fei’s behavior, which did not follow central control and acted unexpectedly, became an unpredictable military risk factor, so the court decided to remove Yue Fei.
