제주 「시왕맞이」에 담긴 죽음과 치유 -굿의 의례와 본풀이, 심층심리학적 분석을 중심으로- (A Depth Psychological Analysis of Death and Healing in the Ritual for the Dead (Siwangmaji) on Jeju Island)

초록

이 논문은 현지 조사를 토대로 제주 시왕맞이를 죽음과 치유의 주제로 심층심리학적 분석을 한 것이다. 제주의 시왕맞이가 원만한 죽음을 맞이하지 못한 조상들의 넋을 위로하고 살아있는 자손들의 고통을 보듬는다는 점에 주목하여 심리 치유 관점에서 시왕맞이를 다루었다. 무속은 종교와 의학의 접점에서 핵심적 치유기능을 수행해 왔으나 이러한 전통이 급속도로 사라진 상태이다. 현대 의학의 발달로 이러한 굿의 전통이 일상적인 치병의 구심점에서 멀어졌음에도 치유를 논의하는 이유는 무속적 치유는 병을 통해 드러나는 불행을 다룬다는 점에서 과학이나 의학이 다루지 못하는 부분을 아직도 담당하고 있기 때문이다.
본고는 현장에서 본주로써 참여 관찰한 시왕맞이를 가지고 제차를 정리하고 의례 구조를 살펴보았으며, 시왕맞이에서 구송되는 세 가지 본풀이-인간 죽음의 연유와 망자가 저승으로 가는 과정을 설명한 차사본풀이, 인과 관계로 설명될 수 없는 죽음의 현실적 모순을 다룬 지장본풀이, 그리고 조상을 맞이하여 능동적으로 죽음에 대처한 사만이 본풀이-를 통해 죽음에 대한 제주인들의 탄력적인 사고와 확장된 조상신 개념을 짚어 보았다.
또한 시왕맞이를 구성하는 여러 주체의 다자간 관계를 심방 중심으로 분석하였다. 심방은 영개울림, 산받아 분부사룀 등으로 망자의 말을 전하고, 굿을 의뢰한 본주의 사연을 연유닦음을 통해 반복하며, 멩두를 가지고 신의 점사를 전달한다는 점에서 조상의 말을 전하는 영매이자 산자의 대변인이며 신의 뜻을 알리는 전령임을 고찰하고 치유자의 관점에서 논하였다.
마지막으로 의식과 무의식을 넘나들면서 언어와 비언어의 경계를 허물고, 한풀이와 신명풀이를 동시에 함으로써 치유에 접근하는 굿의 독자적인 면모를 조망하고 심층 심리상담과 제주 무속을 상처받은 치유자의 원형, 치유의 공간, 치유자와 내담자와의 관계, 의미 있는 우연성 (동시성), 굿덕의 개념을 가지고 비교하였다. 이 연구는 문화적 환경과 역사적 맥락 속에 면면히 이어온 제주 시왕맞이를 불행과 죽음, 상실과 애도의 측면에서 현대의 심리 치유와 연계할 가능성에 대해 타진하고 있다.

영어초록

This ethnographic research examines the ritual for the dead, siwangmaji, and its systemic healing process with an orientation toward depth psychology. The siwangmaji is a Jeju Island shamanic ritual (gut) in South Korea that centers on dead souls. Shamanism has played a vital role in healing, acting as an interface between religion and medicine throughout the centuries in Korea. Although the development of modern medicine has moved this traditional practice away from the focus on treating illnesses, shamanic healing still presides where science and medicine cannot in terms of treating the state of misfortunes manifested through illness.
Based on the participatory observation of the ritual for the dead in Jeju, this study reviews the structure of the ritual and three death-related mythologies (bonpuri) sung in the siwangmaji. The Chasa bonpuri explains the reason for human death and the process of going to the afterlife, Jijang bonpuri deals with the realistic contradictions of death and the bonpuri of Samani, who actively encounters death with the aid of his ancestor. This analysis examines Jeju people’s flexible viewpoint of death and their expanded concept of ancestral gods, which enables them to actively accept death while bringing a closer connection to the ancestor’s spirits.
In addition, the multilateral relationships of the various entities in siwangmaji are analyzed with a focus on the shamans. Jeju shamans (simbang) represent the archetype of a wounded healer who empathizes with the suffering of the dead and living, by playing three roles during the gut: delivering the messages of the dead, conveying the gods’ will through divination with shaman tools, and representing the living by explaining the reason for the ritual.
Lastly, depth psychological psychotherapy and Jeju shamanism are compared with the concept of the healing space through collective mourning, the relationship between the healer and the healed, meaningful coincidence (synchronicity), gutdeok (blessings after the ritual), wounded healer and collective mourning. It also illustrates the unique aspect of gut, which approaches healing by not only resolving sorrow and resentment (hanpuri) but also expressing joy and excitement (shinmyeongpuri) dedicated to the ancestors by breaking down the boundaries between verbal and nonverbal communication and crossing the consciousness and unconscious. This study explores the possibility of bridging the Jeju siwangmaji with contemporary bereavement modalities and Western psychotherapy practices related to healing trauma, death, loss, and mourning.
