초록

해외입양인 내러티브는 역사 속에서 표면화되지 못했던 공간, 다시말해 역사의 틈새 속에서 누수 되었던 진실을 담아내는데, 이때 에이버리 골던(Avery F. Gordon)이 『유령적인 사건들: 유령의 출몰과 사회학적공상의 산물』(Ghostly Matters: Haunting and the Sociological Imagination)에서 주장하는 ‘유령’의 존재와 그 의미는 이와 같은 논의들을 성찰하는 데 있어 중요한 틀을 제공한다. 이 글은 ‘유령’의 모습으로 모국과의 교섭을시작한 해외입양인 내러티브를 〈여행자〉와 〈귀향〉 속에서 살펴보고,이 두 작품에 나타난 침묵된 이주와 죽음의 이미지에 주목함으로써 소외되고 배제되었던 주변인의 서사를 부활시키는 데 그 주안점을 둔다.
〈여행자〉는 1970년대 서울 근교를 주된 배경으로 삼아 한국의 해외입양역사 제 1기와 제 2기를 포괄적으로 다루는 영화이다. 본 작품에서는‘뿌리 뽑힘과 타국으로의 이주’에 초점을 맞추어 모국에서 타국으로 입양되는 주인공의 행로 속에 투영된 죽음의 이미지를 고찰하고, 고국에서의 뿌리 뽑힘과 침묵된 이주를 통해 골던의 ‘유령’이 형성되어 가는 과정을 추적한다. 〈귀향〉에서는 타국에서 모국으로의 역이주/귀환을 주요 논점으로 삼아 미혼모와 해외입양인 담론에 투사된 한국의 과거, 현재, 미래를 통합적으로 읽어내는 작업을 수행한다. 또한, 성녀 모녀, 성찬, 소연과 아기의 이야기를 통해 재현되는 죽음과 부활의 순환적 이미지를 ‘유령의 출몰과 대물림의 역사’ 속에서 해석함으로써 억압되고 침묵되었던 주체들의 목소리를 발화하는 기제로 삼는다.

영어초록

The  objective  of  this  article  is  to  examine  the  silent migration  and  the  images  of  death  reflected  in  Korean adopteesʹ  narratives,  specifically  in  the  recently  released movies,  Ounie  Lecomteʹs A  Brand  New  Life (2009)  and Sun‐kyoung  Ahnʹs A  Blind  River (2009).  This  study  is interdisciplinary  in  that  it  combines  the  historical  and  social context  of  international  adoption  in  Korea  and  Avery  F. Gordonʹs  theoretical  meditation  on  haunting  and  the appearance  of  the  ghost.  The  notion  of ʺthe  past  that  haunts the  presentʺ  can  affect  inquiry  into  the  economic  and  political system  of  Korea  which  exerted  on  practices  of  social disappearance  by  sending  their  children  out  by  overseas adoption,  the  consequence  of  which  comes  as  the  returning  of the  dead,  the  ghost  of  the  past  or  the  adopted  Koreans  from overseas.  The  history  that  constituted  the  silent  migration uprooted  the  children  out  of  their  motherland,  doffed  their Korean‐ness,  and  made  them  disappear  from  the  birth country. The  study  is  divided  into  four  sections.  The  first  section briefly  introduces  the  history  of  international  adoption  in Korea  and  Gordonʹs  arguments  on  the  socio‐political/socio ‐cultural  significance  of  the  ghost.  The  second  section  offers the  cinematic  representations  of  an  adopted  Korean,  Jin‐hee,  in A  Brand  New  Life‐‐the  movie  portrays  Korea  in  the  1970s, together  with  the  fragmented  pieces  of  memory  of  the  Korean War,  the  period  where  the  international  adoption  first  broke out‐‐and  it  analyzes  the  images  of  death  through  the  process of  uprootedness  from  her  birth  country  to  her  silent  migration to  France.  The  third  section  engages  with  the  issue  of  birth mothers  and  the  returning  of  Korean  adoptees  by  presenting the  narratives  of  Sung‐chanʹs  and  So‐yeonʹs  one  by  one,  step by  step  in A  Blind  River. The  movie  deals  with  the  period from  the  mid‐1970s  to  the  present,  which  excavates  silent migration  and  epitomizes  the  images  of  death,  that  continues the  circulation  of ʺhan,ʺ  the  grudge  in  Korean  history.
