소설 『바보들의 행진』에 나타난 유희하는 대학생 주체(들) - ‘웃음’의 의미를 중심으로 (College Student Subject(s) Playing in the Novel The March of Fools - Focusing on the Meaning of ‘Laughter’)

초록

이 글은 소설 『바보들의 행진』에 나타나는 대학생 주체들의 웃음 혹은 유희의 의미를 밝히는 데 목적을 둔다. 이 소설에서 웃음과 유희는 다양한 의미로 해석될 수 있는데, 웃음이 유발되고 유희가 펼쳐지는 상황에서 병태와 영자를 비롯한 대학생 주체들이 어떤 식으로 형상화되는지를 확인할 수 있다. 나아가 이러한 대학생 주체들의 형상화나 이들이 벌이는 사건을 통해 궁극적으로 이 텍스트에 내재한 이데올로기의 의미는 무엇인지도 볼 수 있게 된다.
『바보들의 행진』의 인물들이 벌이는 우스꽝스러운 사건들과 이 소설에 가득한 언어유희, 또한 소설 마지막의 희극적인 서사 규범 파괴 등은 이 소설에 드러나는 웃음이 전복적일 수 있음을 의미한다. 그러나 이 소설에 나타나는 웃음과 대학생 주체들이 벌이는 유희에는 기존의 지배권력을 재생산하는 측면이 공존하기도 한다. 소설에서 남성 대학생 주체(병태)는 이성적인 태도로 ‘자유’를 추구하면서 기성세대의 권위, 국가권력, 폭력적인 규범 등을 비웃는다. 그러나 이 주체는 아무 반성 없이 자본주의적 욕망을 드러내면서 가부장적 주체의 폭력성을 보이기도 한다. 한편 여성 대학생 주체(영자)는 우스꽝스러운 물욕, 감정 과잉, 본능에 충실한 단순성 등을 드러내면서 독자의 웃음을 유도한다. 그러나 이 여성 대학생 주체는 ‘과소비 주체로서의 여성’, ‘통제되지 않는 감정적 존재로서의 여성’, ‘남성을 이용하는 여성’의 의미를 지니면서 가부장적인 잣대로 쉽게 독해되지 않는 존재로 다가오기도 한다.
기존의 연구는 『바보들의 행진』에 드러나는 현실 질서에 대한 저항적, 비판적, 전복적 의미에 주목하여 왔다. 그러나 이 글에서는 이런 의미와 함께 있는 기존의 권력을 재생산하는 측면에도 주목함으로써 텍스트의 자기 배반성을 드러냈다는 점에 의미가 있다. 또한 이 소설에서 중요한 가치로 언급되는 개인의 자유와 믿음 등이 어떤 식으로 ‘자유주의’ 이데올로기와 닿아 있는가를 살펴봄으로써 이 소설의 역사적, 사회적 의미를 밝혔다는 점에도 의미를 부여할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to reveal the meaning of the laughter or play of the college students in the novel The March of Fools. In this novel, laughter and play can be interpreted in various ways, and it is possible to check how the subjects of college students, including Byeong-tae and Yeong-ja, are shaped in a situation where laughter is induced and play unfolds. Furthermore, it is possible to see what the meaning of the ideology inherent in this text is ultimately through the shaping of these college students and their events.
The comical events of the characters in The March of Fools, the language play that fills this novel, and the destruction of the comical narrative norms at the end of the novel mean that the laughter shown in this novel can be subversive. However, the laughter and play of the college students appearing in this novel also coexists with the aspect of reproducing the existing dominant power. In the novel, the male college student (Byeong-tae) laughs at the authority, state power, and violent norms of the older generation while pursuing ‘freedom’ with a rational attitude. However, this subject shows the violence of the patriarchal subject while revealing capitalist desire without any reflection. On the other hand, the female college student (Yeong-ja) induces laughter by exposing the comical greed for things, excessive emotionality, and the simplicity that is faithful to the instinct. However, this female college student subject has the meaning of ‘a woman as a subject of over-consumption’, ‘a woman as an uncontrolled emotional existence’, and ‘a woman who uses men’, and comes close to being an existence that cannot be easily read by patriarchal standards.
Existing studies have focused on the resistance, critical and subversive meanings of the real order revealed in The March of Fools. However, this article is meaningful in that it reveals the self-treachery of the text by paying attention to the aspect of reproducing the existing power with this meaning. In addition, by examining how individual freedom and belief, which are mentioned as important values in this novel, are in contact with the ‘liberal’ ideology, it can be meaningful in that it reveals the historical and social meaning of this novel.
