전시체제기 조선인의 신체동원과 죽음의 미학 - 내선일체와 프로파간다를 중심으로 - (The Aesthetics of Physical Mobilization and Death of Colonial Koreans during the Warring States Period)

초록

이 글은 일제강점기 1930년대 이후 전시체제기가 형성되면서 전쟁에 동원되는 신체와 전쟁에서의 죽음에 대한 인식, 그리고 미담과 미화를 넘어 미학으로의 과정을 내선일체와 프로파간다의 관점에서 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다.
이 같은 목적에 따른 연구내용은 다음과 같다. 일본 육군성은 1938년2월 18일 조선지원병제도 실시를 공식 발표한 후 조선인 지원병 공모를6월 1일부터 시작되었다. 그러나 조선인 지원병 제도는 ‘육군특별지원병령’으로 공포되었으며, 4월 3일에 시행되었다. 지원병령에 대해 『매일신보』는 “조선의 청사를 찬연히 빛나게 할 것”, “조선 통치사상 뚜렷이 빛나게 될 위업”, “내선일체의 성업”이라고 선전하였다. 지원병 선발은 신체검사와 구술시험, 학과시험 등 전형시험을 거쳐 최종 확정하였다. 특히 ‘신장 160미터 이상’과 ‘체구강건’은 신체와 직접적인 기준이되었다. 이 기준에 따라 1943년까지 지원병으로 802,047명이 지원하였으며, 17,664명이 실제 동원되었다.
동원된 전장(戰場)은 삶과 죽음이 공존하는 공간이었으며, 죽은 자에 대해서는 새로운 의미가 부여하고자 하였다. 이는 전쟁을 정의롭게 만들기 위한 전략이기도 하다. 그렇기 때문에 전사자 즉 죽음에 대한 미학적 의미를 담고자 하였으며, 함께 공유하고자 하였다. 단순한 죽음아니라 정의로운 죽음으로 미화시키고 승화시켰다.
조선인 지원병 중 최초의 전사자는 이인석(李仁錫)이었으며, 그의 죽음은 조선인 지원병의 모범으로 활용되었다. 그의 죽음은 1939년 7월8일부터 일제가 패망될 때까지 지속적으로 활용하였다. 첫째는 지원병이인석의 전사 즉 죽음에 대한 것, 둘째는 이인석 죽음에 대한 위문 또는 추모와 관련된 것, 셋째는 이인석 무용담을 미화하여 위인화한 것, 넷째는 내선일체의 상징으로 미화한 것 등이다.
이러한 일련의 과정을 통해 일제는 이인석의 죽음을 미화하고, 미담을 생산하였다. 이는 미화, 미담 생산을 넘어 그의 죽음이 식민지배정책에 활용할 뿐 아니라 숭고하게 인식케 하는 미학으로 승화되는 과정을 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to examine the body mobilized for war, the perception of death in war, and the process of aesthetics beyond aesthetics and beauty as the wartime regime has been formed since the 1930s of Japanese colonial era.
The contents of the study for this purpose are as follows. The Japanese Army Ministry officially announced the implementation of the Joseon Volunteer System on February 18, 1938, and the Korean Volunteer Contest began on June 1. However, the Korean volunteer system was promulgated as the “Special Army Support Military Order” and was implemented on April 3. Regarding volunteers rule, Maeil Shinbo promoted them as “a feat that will make Joseon’s building shine brightly,” “a feat that will clearly shine in the history of Joseon’s govern,” and “a successful business of all internal lines.” The selection of volunteers was finalized through screening tests such as physical examinations, oral tests, and department tests. In particular, “height over 160 meters” and “body strength” became direct standards for the body. According to this standard, 802,047 volunteers applied as volunteers until 1943, and 17,664 were actually mobilized.
The mobilized battlefield was a space where life and death coexist, and a new meaning was given to the dead. This is also a strategy to make war just. Therefore, it was intended to contain the aesthetic meaning of the dead, that is, death, and to share it together. It was glorified and sublimated into a just death, not a simple death.
Lee In-seok was the first Korean volunteer to die, and his death was used as a norm for Korean volunteers. His death was used continuously from July 8, 1939, until the defeat of the Japanese Empire. The first is the warrior of volunteer Lee In-seok, that is, death, the second is related to condolences or memorials for Lee In-seok’s death, the third is glorifying and personifying Lee In-seok’s dance story, and the fourth is glorifying it as a symbol of all internal lines.
Through this series of processes, glorified Lee In-seok’s death and produced a impressive story. This shows the process of sublimating his death beyond the production of beautification and impressive story into an aesthetics that not only uses it for colonial policy but also makes it sublimely recognized.
