This study examines the distinctive features of Chinese learners of Korean word-initial stops, and aims to identify a correlation between their production and perception abilities. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, Chinese learners showed lower accuracy in producing fortis stops in comparison to their relatively high accuracy in producing lenis stops. However, they tended to produce fortis and aspirated consonants in a similar way to lenis stops, indicating a failure to make good use of VOT and pitch in producing Korean words. Second, the participants’ perception accuracy was highest in relation to fortis and lowest in relation to lenis stops, and it was particularly noticeable that they often failed to make the distinction between lenis and aspirated stops meaning they were unable to pick up the pitch of Korean words. Third, errors in production and in perception showed different tendencies which indicated a very weak correlation between the two. These findings suggest a need for differentiated pedagogical approaches to production and perception for Chinese learners regarding Korean word-initial stops.
