죽음에 대한 생태미학적 관점이 적용된 지속가능한 베리얼 디자인 탐구 (Research into the Sustainable Burial Design from an Ecological Aesthetic Perspective towards Death)

초록

본 연구는 인간의 죽음 이후에 발생하는 장례 절차들이 우리 사회와 자연 환경의 지속가능성을 담보하면서 이루어지도록 하기 위한 디자인 탐색에 목적을두었다. 이를 위하여 먼저 생태주의와 생태미학에서이론적⋅철학적 근거를 모색하여 제시함으로써 죽음을 개인의 불행한 사건으로 단정하는 인식에서 벗어나, 라이프사이클 상의 당연하고 자연스러운 단계로수용하고 준비해야 하는 당위를 주장하였다. 그리고생태미학의 개념을 지속가능한 디자인에 통합하여 ‘생태미학적으로 지속가능한 디자인’의 목표와 접근법을추론한 후, 사례 연구를 거쳐서 최종적으로 ‘생태미학적으로 지속가능한 베리얼 디자인’에 필요한 준거와디자인 방법론을 다음과 같이 제시하였다.
첫째, 생태미학적으로 지속가능한 베리얼 디자인은사체와 골분이 생물 분해되어 생태계의 영양물질로사용될 수 있도록 생태효과성을 수반해야 한다. 둘째, 유골함이나 관이 생물에 영양분을 공급하거나 서식처로 활용될 수 있도록, 생태시스템에서 착안한 바이오미메틱 디자인 방식을 적용한다. 셋째, 사회의 구성원들이 생태원리와 생태미학에 근거한 새로운 장례 절차와 장법을 수용하기 용이하도록, 정신적 만족감과내적 가치의 전달을 고려한 스피리추얼 디자인의 접근법을 베리얼 디자인에 결합한다. 넷째, 생태적인 생활양식과 가치관을 사용자들이 스스로 확산하고 스토리텔링할 수 있도록 디자인 액티비즘적 요소를 강화한다. 마지막으로, 생태미학적으로 지속가능한 매장설계는 해당 지역의 특수성을 반영한 생태적 장례 공간을 새롭게 발굴하거나 기존의 묘지 공간을 생태미학적으로 변용하는 것을 고민해야 하며, 매장지나 납골당에 추가로 사회적 기능을 부여하는 등을 통하여각각의 생활권역에서 자립적⋅지속적인 장례 인프라를 구축해야 한다.
이와 같이 본 연구는 생태미학이 죽음을 다루는 스탠스를 기반으로 하여, 선택의 폭이 매우 좁을 뿐더러다양한 문제와 연관되어 있는 현재의 장례와 관련 절차들을 지속가능한 방향으로 이끌어나가기 위한 디자인 방법론을 모색하고자 하였다. 향후 본 연구의 결과를 토대로, 다양한 디자인 실험과 프로젝트 등 현실화방안에 대한 후속연구가 이어지기를 기대한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study was to explore the design so that funeral procedures occurring after human death can be carried out while ensuring the sustainability of our society and natural environment.
In order to achieve this goal, this study first sought and presented theoretical and philosophical grounds in ecology and ecological aesthetics, thereby securing justification for why our society should be free from the perception that defines death as an unfortunate event of individuals and accept it as a natural step in its lifecycle. And next, after integrating the concept of ecological aesthetics into sustainable design, the goals and approaches of ‘ecological sustainable design’ were deduced, and finally, the criteria and methodologies needed for ‘ecologically sustainable burial design’ were presented as follows.
Firstly, ecologically sustainable burial design should be accompanied by ecological effectiveness so that the body and bones can be biodegraded and used as nutrients for the ecosystem. Secondly, biomimetic design methods based on ecological systems should be applied so that urns or coffins can be nourished or used as habitats for living organisms. Thirdly, burial design should combine the approach of spiritual design in consideration of spiritual satisfaction and the delivery of inner values so that members of society are more likely to accept new funeral procedures and burial methods based on ecological principles and ecological aesthetics. The fourth criterion is to strengthen the elements of design activism so that users can spread their own ecological lifestyles, values and storytelling.
Lastly, ecologically sustainable burial designs should consider newly discovering ecological funeral spaces that reflect the specificity of the area, transforming existing burial spaces into ecological ones, and establishing independent and sustained funeral infrastructure in each living area by providing additional social functions to burial sites or charnel houses.
As above, based on the stance of ecological aesthetics dealing with death, this study sought a design methodology to lead the current funeral procedures, which are not only very narrow in choice but also related to various issues, in a sustainable direction. It is expected that follow-up research on various design experiments and ways to realize the contents of this study will continue in the near future.
