초록

이 논문은 이문열의 『젊은 날의 초상』에 나타난 시공간의 변화와 타자와의 관계를 중심으로, 성숙의 과정을 어떻게 고유한 방식으로 구현하고 있으며 주제의식을 강화하고 있는지를 분석함으로써, 이 작품의 한국 교양소설로서의 문학적 독창성을 조명하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 작품 내 시공간적 배경과 계절적 흐름이 단순한 서사의 배경에 머무르지 않고 주체의 성숙 과정과 철학적 성찰을 형상화하는 서사적 기제로 작용한다는 점에 주목한다. 특히 각 공간과 계절의 흐름 속에서 ‘나’가 타자와 맺는 관계는 주체의 내적 성숙과 공동체적 정체성 형성에 핵심적 역할을 함을 밝히고자 하였다.
『젊은 날의 초상』은 강진(1부 「하구」), 서울 대학가(2부 「기쁜 우리 젊은 날」), 도시 외부(3부 「그해 겨울」)라는 공간적 배경의 선택과 늦봄에서 여름, 가을, 겨울, 그리고 다시 맞이할 봄으로 이어지는 계절적 변화를 통해 주체의 성숙 과정을 단계적으로 구성한다. 강진에서의 타자와의 만남은 사물의 외관을 넘어 실질에 다가서는 성찰의 계기를 제공하며, 대학가는 좌절과 실패를 통해 자신의 한계를 직시하는 공간으로 기능한다. 도시 외부의 방랑공간에서는 절망을 삶의 출발점으로 삼아 새로운 가치를 탐구하는 여정이 이루어진다. 이러한 시공간적 리듬과 계절적 변화의 합주와 변주를 통해 시공간 요소가 상호작용하며 주체의 심리적․철학적 성숙이 유기적으로 연결되고, 서사 구조의 통일성이 강조된다.
타자와의 관계는 주체의 성숙 과정을 유도하는 핵심적 매개로 작용한다. 강진에서의 타자들은 과거 사회적 맥락과의 간접적 상호작용을 통해 ‘나’가 자신의 존재와 세계를 성찰하도록 이끈다. 대학에서는 하가와 김형과의 교류를 통한 지적 탐구와 실천의 실패를 경험하며, 이는 좌절과 자기성찰의 계기를 제공한다. 도시 외부에서는 친척 누님과 칼잡이 사내와의 조우가 절망 속에서 새로운 가치를 모색하도록 이끄는 계기로 작용한다. 이러한 타자와의 관계는 단절과 상실을 통해 새로운 출발을 가능하게 하며, 이는 교양소설의 전형적 주제인 내적 성숙과 사회적 통합을 설득력 있게 구현한다.
본 논문은 『젊은 날의 초상』이 교양소설로서의 전형성을 유지하면서도, 한국적 맥락에서 청년 세대의 문학적 정체성과 성숙 과정을 구체화하고 있음을 밝혔다. 특히 시공간적 배경과 타자와의 관계를 중심으로 서사 구조를 분석함으로써, 기존 연구가 주로 작품의 보편적 교양소설적 특성에 초점을 맞춘 데 비해, 본 논문은 시공간과 관계적 요소를 심층적으로 분석하여 작품의 독창적 가치를 조명하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 이 작품이 단순한 내적 탐구에 그치지 않고, 타자와의 유대와 공동체적 실천을 통해 성숙을 이루는 과정을 설득력 있게 형상화하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이러한 논의는 한국 교양소설의 독자적 가치를 탐구하고, 교양소설의 한국적 변용 양상을 제시하는 또 하나의 시도라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study aims to highlight the literary uniqueness of Portrait of Youthful Days as a Korean Bildungsroman by analyzing how the spatiotemporal transformations and relationships with others (the “Other”) in the novel uniquely shape the protagonist’s maturation process and reinforce its thematic consciousness. This paper focuses on the spatiotemporal settings and seasonal transitions within the narrative, emphasizing their role as narrative mechanisms that extend beyond mere background elements to actively shape the protagonist’s journey of growth and philosophical reflection. In particular, the study explores how the protagonist’s interactions with others across various spaces and seasons play a critical role in fostering inner development and forming a communal identity.
Portrait of Youthful Days depicts the protagonist’s maturation through its spatial settings—Gangjin (Part 1, “Estuary”), the university district in Seoul (Part 2, “Our Joyful Youthful Days”), and external urban spaces (Part 3, “That Winter”)—and the seasonal transitions from late spring to summer, autumn, winter, and eventually a return to spring. Encounters with others in Gangjin provide opportunities for the protagonist to transcend surface-level perceptions and engage in deeper reflections on essence. The university becomes a space where the protagonist confronts his limitations through experiences of frustration and failure. Meanwhile, the external urban spaces mark a journey of existential despair, where despair serves as the starting point for exploring new values. The interplay between spatial rhythms and seasonal changes creates an organic connection between psychological growth and philosophical maturity, emphasizing the unity of the narrative structure.
Relationships with others serve as key mediators in the protagonist’s maturation process. In Gangjin, interactions with others enable the protagonist to engage indirectly with historical and social contexts, fostering self-reflection on his existence and worldview. At the university, intellectual pursuits and failed praxis, experienced through exchanges with Ha-ga and Kim-hyeong, offer critical moments of despair and self-awareness. In external urban spaces, encounters with a distant relative and a “knife-wielding man” catalyze the search for new values amidst despair. These relationships facilitate new beginnings through experiences of separation and loss, embodying the central themes of inner growth and social integration characteristic of the Bildungsroman genre.
This study demonstrates that Portrait of Youthful Days retains the archetypal characteristics of the Bildungsroman while also contextualizing the literary identity and maturation process of the young generation within a distinctly Korean framework. By focusing on the spatiotemporal settings and the dynamics of relationships, this paper moves beyond previous studies’ emphasis on the universal characteristics of the Bildungsroman, offering an in-depth analysis of the novel’s unique literary value. This approach underscores how the novel persuasively portrays maturation not merely as an introspective process but as one realized through relationships with others and communal engagement. This discussion contributes to understanding the distinctive features of Korean Bildungsromane and suggests their potential for localized adaptation within Korean literature.
