초록

이 글은 현대 사회를 구성하는 여러 이미지 중에서 죽음의 이미지를 현대시에 표현된 양상과 현대 소비 생활을 서로 연관하여 고찰한다. 현대시에서 드러나는 현대 사회의 다양한 죽음의 형태가 원인과 사정의 구분 없이 이미지화 되는 양상을 기 드보르의 스펙타클의 관점에서 살펴본다. 이를 위해 현대 사회의 죽음 이미지를 시의 이미지로 재현하고 그 양상을 다양한 시각으로 표현하고 있는 조동범의 시집을 주 텍스트로 삼는다. 조동범의 시에 나타난 죽음 이미지를 통해 현대 사회에서 구경거리로 전락하는 죽음 이미지의 원인과 배경을 조명한다. 현대 사회는 소비가 조장되는 가운데 이미지 중심의 소비생활을 추구하는 형태로 운용된다. 현대인이 스스로 개성이라고 여기는 소비 행위의 최종적 선택도, 드보르의 논의에 따르면 현대 사회가 계획한 생산 수단의 일환일 뿐, 현대인은 이 사회의 구조에 종속되어 있다. 하지만 현대인은 이런 자의식이 없이 현대성의 특징 중 하나인 속도와 요식문화를 전유하는 방식으로 소비를 추동한다. 이 과정에서 죽음은 우연처럼 발생되거나 그 실체가 은폐된다. 시 창작으로 재현되어 스펙타클로 현상되는 죽음 이미지는 두 가지 양상으로 살펴본다. 하나는 죽음이 갖는 고유의 의미가 상실된 채 훼손되는 양상이다. 미디어 등을 통해 현대인은 죽음에 대한 충격과 놀람에 무감해지고 있다. 따라서 죽음이 훼손되어 버려지는 양상은 인간에 대한 존중과 배려의 상실과 연관된다. 죽음이 훼손된 채 추상적으로 버려짐으로 스펙타클 현상으로의 죽음은 하나의 이미지가 될 뿐임을 살펴본다. 또 하나는 죽음이 거래되어 죽음에 등급이 매겨지고 등급에 따라 소비가 이뤄지는 양상이다. 살아있는 동물들이 산 채로 거래의 대상이 되는 장소는 도심과 외곽 불문하고 이뤄진다. 이 거래는 죽음을 담보로 한다. 죽음은 이후 죽음의 매매를 성립시키는 구조를 이루며 현대인은 그 구조의 중심이 되어 소비의 주최가 되고 있음을 살펴본다.
현대 사회를 구성하는 스펙타클 현상으로의 죽음 이미지를 통해, 인간의 삶이 지닌 근본적인 가치를 상실시키며 삶에 대한 의지와 존중을 무력화시키는 요인을 발견한 후, 조동범의 시에 나타난 표현의 양상으로 그 현상을 들춰낸다. 이로써 자본주의의 구조 아래에서 이러한 현상이 사라지거나 예전의 생활 형태로 돌아갈 수는 없지만, 시 창작이 시적 담론을 형성하여 현대 사회의 흐름에 금이 가게하고, 현대 사회에 이의를 제기하는 방법임을 밝힌다. 시적 담론을 통한 지속적인 문제 제기야말로 현대 사회의 조건을 추문으로 만들 수 있는 요인이며, 시의 가치와 의미의 전망을 밝히는 일이 될 것이다.

영어초록

This thesis studies the death imagery among lots of imagery comprising modern society, relating conditions represented in modern poetry to modern consumption life. It examines how diverse forms of modern society are applied to the aspects of imagery, regardless of causes and conditions, in the viewpoint of the process of spectacle of Guy Debord. For this, the study chooses the poetry book of Dongbeum Cho as a main text which expresses death imagery of modern society in diverse vision.
Through death imagery in the poetry of Dongbeum Cho, the study looks into causes and background of death imagery which degenerates to tamasha in modern society.
Modern society runs in forms of pursuing consumption life focused on imagery while it encourages consumption. According to the discussion of Guy Debord, the final choice of consumption behaviors which modern man regards him/herself as his/her personality is just a part of production means planned by modern society and modern man are subject to the structure of this society. However, modern man without self-consciousness fosters consumption in a manner of possessing exclusively such as food culture and speed, a characteristic of modernity. In the process death is generated by chance or the truth gets concealed.
The death imagery is examined in two aspects, appearing as the spectacle represented in poetry writing. One is the aspect that the original meaning of death gets lost and damaged. Modern man gets numb to the shock and surprise about death on the media and so on. Therefore, the manners that death gets damaged and cast away are related to the loss of respect and consideration for humans. Death as the spectacle phenomenon is just imagery because it gets damaged and deserted abstractly.
The other is the aspect that death is traded and ranked, and consumed by its rank. The place where animals alive are traded can be in a city or suburbs. The trade demands death. Death has the structure which later carries out the trade of death. Modern man is in the center of the structure and the subject of consumption.
Through death imagery as the spectacle phenomenon comprising modern society, this study accuses such phenomenon in the aspects of expression in the poetry of Dongbeum Cho because the phenomenon makes the fundamental values of human life lost and the elements are found to debilitate the will and respect for life. Although such phenomenon could not disappear or return to the old ways of life in the structure of capitalism, the study reveals that poetry writing may form poetic discourses and break the unilateral flow of modern society, and it is a way to suggest different views on modern society. The continuous suggestions of problems through poetic discourses is the element which may make the conditions of modern society as a scandal, disclosing the prospect of values and meaning of poetry.
