죽음과 노년에 대한 문학적 연구 —김태수 희곡작품을 중심으로— (A Literary Study of Death and Old Age -Focused on Kim Tae-soo' Drama)

초록

‘문학은 시대의 아들’이라는 헤겔의 주장을 빌지 않더라도 문학이 지향해야 할 중요한 목적의 하나가 사회적 가치의 추구라는 것은 당연한 사실이다. 노령화가 심각한 사회문제로 대두되고 있는 이 시대에 희곡작가는 당연히 노인과 죽음에 관심을 기울여야 한다. 인간이 절대로 극복할 수 없는 문제가 나이 들어 죽음에 이르는 것이기에 이는 식상하지만 매력적인 주제이기도 하다. 하지만 노인이 중심인물로 등장하고, 죽음을 소재로 한 희곡작품이 드문 것이 현실이다.
이 논문에서는 이 시대 관객과의 소통성이 뛰어난 작가 김태수의 희곡 <해가 지면 달이 뜨고> <꽃마차는 달려간다> <명배우 황금봉>을 텍스트로 노인과 죽음의 양상에 대해 살펴보았다. 이 작품들은 노년과 죽음의 문제를 현실적인 관점에서 접근하고 있다. <해가 지면 달이 뜨고> <꽃마차는 달려간다>는 노년을 ‘폭주노인’과 ‘젊은 노인’이란 새로운 관점에서 접근하여 문제적 화두를 던진다. 보편적이며, 상식적인 노년의 이미지와 대비되는 신 노인을 등장시킨 것은 노년의 현실을 구체적으로 반영한 것이다. 특히 이 작품들이 창작된 10여 년 전에는 이러한 노인문제의 가능성이 제기되지 않았다는 것을 고려하면 작가 김태수의 현실적 직관이 뛰어나다는 것을 확인하게 된다. 또 <명배우 황금봉>에서는 황금봉의 외로운 삶을 그려 독거노인의 문제적 현실을 직시한다. 가난과 병, 외로움으로 지친 독거노인의 자살은 이미 우리에게 익숙한 사건이다.
그리고 작품 속 노인들은 모두 죽음과 마주한다. 병사, 자살 등 양상은 다르지만 죽음에 대처하는 노인들의 태도에 작가의 관점이 명확하게 드러난다. 죽음을 범우주 영혼관으로 이해해 생태적 죽음을 그린다. 이로써 죽음에 임하는 긍정적인 태도를 제시한다. 생태적 관점에서 바라보면 삶과 죽음은 하나이며, 죽음에 이르러 인간으로서의 존엄성을 드러낼 수 있는 공감능력이 확장된다. 늙어서 죽는 것은 거스를 수 없는 자연의 순리이다. 단지 어떻게 늙고, 어떻게 죽음을 준비해야 하는 지에 대한 의지와 선택의 문제가 중요하다. 김태수의 작품 속에는 이러한 고민에 대한 작가의 통찰력이 담겨 있다.

영어초록

It is natural and proper to say that one of literature's important purposes is pursuit of social values, even without the need to borrow Hegel's argument that literature is the son of the era. In this era when aging has emerged as a serious social problem, playwrights should pay attention to senior issues. The problem humans can never overcome is aging and dying, and therefore the topic of aging is not only tiring and but also attractive. However, plays where an elderly person appears as a protagonist and whose main subject is death are very rare.
This thesis examined the elderly and aspects of death with the texts in plays written by Kim Tae-soo, a contemporary playwright good at communicating with the audience, such as When the Sun Sets, the Moon Rises, A Flower Carriage Runs and A Famous Actor Hwanggeumbong. These works approach the issue of old age and death from realistic perspectives. When the Sun Sets, the Moon Rises and A Flower Carriage Runs present a controversial topic of dialogue from new perspectives of old age like "recklessly running old person" and "young, elderly person". In order to reflect the reality of old age in a detailed manner, the playwright has new elderly persons who are in contrast with common-sense images of old age appear on the stage. In particular, given that a decade ago when they were created, such senior issues were not raised, they show that his realistic intuition is very excellent. A Famous Actor Hwanggeumbong depicts Hwanggeumbong's lonely life, looking straightly on the problematic reality of the elderly living alone. We are accustomed to their committing suicides, stricken by poverty, illness and loneliness.
All the elderly characters in his works become faced with death. Their aspects of death vary from death from disease to suicide but the playwright's standpoints about the elderly's attitudes toward death are clearly revealed. He understands death with a viewpoint of pancosmic spirit and describes ecological death, thereby presenting positive attitudes towards death. From ecological perspectives, life and death are the same; When humans reach death, their capability of sympathy that reveals human dignity expands. Dying of old age is an irresistible scientific principle of the Nature. We only contemplate about our will and choice regarding how to become old and prepare for death. The works by Kim Tae-soo contain the playwright's insight into such contemplations.
