작가 김장수와 ‘백마고지’, 그 군사-젠더화의 표상과 죽음정치 (Kim Jang-soo and ‘Baekmagoji’, Representation of the Military-Genderization and Necro-Politics)

초록

이 글은 작가 김장수를 매개로 ‘백마고지’로 상징되는 고지전의 개인적이고 지역(로컬)적 서사와 재현들을 군사-젠더화된 남성성과 연관시켜 다루는데 그 목적을 두었다. 이 같은 연구 목적은 다음과 같은 배경과 구상 하에서 제기되었다.
첫째 브루스 커밍스(Bruce Cumings)도 지적했듯이 종전 후 냉전의 본격적 신호탄을 쏘아올린 국제적 내전으로서 한국전쟁은 그 실질적 주역인 미국에서마저 ‘잊힌 전쟁(forgotten war)’이 되고 말았다. 그런데 브루스 커밍스의 ‘잊힌 전쟁’의 명실상부한 표상은 고지전이었다고 해도 과언이 아니었다. 둘째 고지전이 ‘잊힌 전쟁’으로 한국전쟁의 어떤 중핵을 건드리고 있다면, 고지전은 어떻게 망각되었는가와 더불어 어떻게 상기되고 소환되고 있는가가 중요해진다. 휴전협정을 향한 가시적인 움직임과 대비되는 고지전의 살육전은 고지전의 군사적 측면 못지않게 억압(망각)된 것의 상흔을 되묻게 하기 때문이다. 셋째 개인적이고 지역(로컬)적 차원의 서사와 재현들은 이 고지전의 억압(망각)된 상흔을 비판적으로 재구하려는 현재의 당면한 인식 및 요구와 맞닿아 있다. 이야기된 것과 이야기되지 않은 것 사이를 유동했던 이 서사와 재현들이 지닌 복합적 의미망은 개인-지역(로컬)-세계를 잇는 삼중의 관계망을 따라 ‘잊힌 전쟁’으로서 한국전쟁의 또 다른 이면을 드러내줄 유력한 단서가 될 수 있을 것이다.
이 글은 이러한 문제의식에서 출발해 고지전, 그 중에서도 ‘백마고지’를 둘러싼 개인적이고 지역(로컬)적 차원의 서사와 재현들에 주목했다. 특히 이 글은 1955년 서울시 문화상 문학 부문의 수상작으로 당당하게 이름을 올린 김장수의 『백마고지』를 중심으로 논의를 전개했다. 군인-작가의 이중신분으로 김장수는 작품 초기부터 ‘백마고지’를 비롯한 고지전의 파괴적 경험과 실상을 내재한 채 이를 젠더 분업에 정초한 낭만적 사랑의 성적 각본으로 전위하거나 대체하는 작품세계를 보여주게 된다. 고지전의 피/아 구분 없는 무가치한 ‘시산혈하(屍山血河)’의 대규모 죽음 사태에 직면해 낭만적 사랑의 성적 각본은 남성들 간의 전우애(형제애)적 이상과 성화(聖化)를 한편으로, 여성 신체와 섹슈얼리티에 대한 의심과 혐오 및 타자화의 젠더 위계질서를 선보이며, 죽음정치를 통한 생명정치의 의미와 가치를 고양시켰다. 이 글은 글로벌한 차원에서 잊힌 전쟁이 되고 만 고지전의 억압(망각)된 상흔이 재귀적인 자기 표상으로 되돌아오는 양상을 비판적으로 재구함으로써 이를 탈피할 대안적 전망을 타진해보고자 했다. 그것만이 ‘백마고지’의 3용사 아니 3군신과 같은 군사-젠더화의 냉전 심성과 자기 유폐가 아닌 탈냉전의 평화와 공존의 삶의 형태를 사유 가능케 할 것이기 때문이다. 이 한 발짝을 떼는 데 이 글의 주된 목적이 있었음을 4장을 갈음하는 결론으로 제시하였다.

This paper aims to deal with personal and local narratives and representations of Gojijeon, symbolized “Baekmagoji” by the writer Kim Jang-soo in connection with military-gendered masculinity. The purpose of this study was raised under the following background and concept.
First, as Bruce Cumings pointed out, the international war that sparked a full-fledged sign of the Cold War after the end of the war, the Korean War has become a “forgotten war” even in the United States, where it was a real leader. Moreover, it was no exaggeration to say that Bruce Cummings’ true representation of the “forgotten War” was Gojijeon. Second, if Gojijeon is touching any core of the Korean War with “forgotten wars,” it is important to know how the Gojijeon was forgotten and how it was recalled and summoned. In contrast to the visible movement toward the ceasefire negotiation, the killing wars of the Gojijeon forced us to recall the scars of being suppressed prior to its military side. Third, personal and local narratives and representations are in contact with the present perception and demand to critically reconstruct the oppressed(forgotten) scars of this Gojijeon. The complex semantic network of these narratives and representations that went between the spoken and the unspeaked is another aspect of the Korean War as a “forgotten war” along the triple circuit of the individual-local-world. It may be an important clue to reveal.
Starting with this problem, this paper focused on the personal and local narratives and representations surrounding Gojijeon, especially the Baekmagoji. In particular, this paper focused on Kim Jang-soo’s Baekmagoji, which was the winner of the 1955 Seoul City Culture Awards for Literature. From the early days of his work, Kim Jang-soo showed the world of works that transposes or replaces the sexual scripts of romantic love based on gender division, embodying the destructive experience and reality of the Gojijeon including Baekmagoji. In the face of large-scale valueless deaths with no distinction between old friend or foe, the sexual scripts of romantic love, on the one hand, presented the ideals and sanctifications of the comradeship among men, on the other hand, the gender hierarchy of doubts, aversions and otherizations of the female body and sexuality, It also raised meaning and value of bio-politics through necro-politics. This paper attempted to explore alternative prospects to escape it by critically reconstructing the suppressed (forgotten) scars of the Gojijeon which has become a “forgotten war” on a global level. That is because it will enable the thinking of peace and coexistence in the post-Cold War, not the cold war spirit and self-closure of military-genderization, such as the three warriors or the three gods of the Baekmagoji. This paper concluded by suggesting that the main purpose was to take this step forward.
