잡보 방학중 전설의 시적 은유와 웃음의 미학 (Poetic metaphors and the Aesthetics of Laughter in Bang Hak-Jung Legend)

초록

건달형 인물이나 트릭스터로 인식된 방학중을 민중적 영웅으로 해석하는 데에서 나아가 ‘잡보’라는 새로운 인물 유형으로 주목하고, 잡보형 인물전설이 왜 우스운지, 웃음의 논리는 어디에 있는지 그 이치를 따져본다. 왜냐하면 잡보형 인물을 사기꾼으로 여기지만 이야기를 전승하는 사람들은 사기행각에 분노하기는커녕 오히려 웃기 때문이다. 방학중의 행위를 속는 사람의 처지에서 보면 속이는 행위처럼 보이나, 듣는 사람의 처지에서 보면 기지가 넘칠 뿐 아니라, 방학중의 처지와 사회적 모순의 숨은 진실이 보인다. 그러므로 드러난 행위의 속임수와, 숨어 있는 진실 사이의 관계를 포착하는 것이 잡보형 인물전설 해석의 새로운 시각이다.
잡보형 인물전설은 내용과 미적 범주에 따라 두 갈래로 분류된다. 내용의 범주로 보면 속이고 속는 유형의 사기담이고, 미적 범주로 보면 웃음을 자아내는 골계담이다. 사기담으로 보면, 방학중이 속일 의도가 없는 것은 물론, 속은 사람이 없어도 마치 누구를 속이는 사기꾼처럼 인식된다. 골계담으로 보면 방학중이 사회적 모순에 맞서는 저항적 언행도 한갓 우스개처럼 인식된다. 사기담과 골계담의 이분법을 아우르면서 두 유형의 한계를 극복하는 분석요소가 문학적 은유이다.
통금을 위반하여 순라군에게 잡힌 방학중이 자신을 ‘서답’ 또는 ‘통서답’이라고 한 것은 민중의 초라한 모습과 저항적 민중의식을 상징적으로 드러낸 은유이다. 따라서 순라군은 은유의 재치와 의미에 감탄하고 ‘천하잡보’로 인식한다. 그러나 비가 새는 오두막을 ‘청룡황룡이 구비치는 집’이라고 하거나, 또는 ‘똥을 새라고 속인’ 이야기는 으레 사기담으로 인식된다. 그러나 사실의 문학적 은유로 보면 역설과 반전에 의한 과장법의 은유이거나 인식론적 진실을 담은 비약적 은유에 해당된다.
따라서 빗물에 얼룩진 초라한 집을, 청룡황룡이 구비치는 집으로 표현한 것은 속임수이되 속임수가 아니다. 사실을 왜곡했기 때문에 속임수 같되, 그 왜곡이 사실을 역설적으로 과장한 은유인 까닭에 문학적 형상의 우스개인 것이다. 똥을 새라고 한 것도 거짓처럼 인식되나, 똥과 새는 모두 맨손으로 잡을 수 없는 것이라는 점에서 상당히 비약적인 은유에 해당된다. 그러나 은유에 대한 이해 능력이 부족한 연구자나 욕망을 취하려는 전설 속의 인물은, 방학중의 기발한 은유를 이해하지 못하는 까닭에 속임수로 여길 수밖에 없다.
따라서 부정한 욕망에 사로잡혀 있는 기녀나 선비, 관리들은 방학중의 파격적 은유를 제대로 이해하지 못하고 속기 마련이다. 그러나 순라군이나 친구, 아내는 방학중을 잘 알기 때문에 파격적 은유를 이해할 뿐 아니라 그 은유에서 방학중의 불편한 진실을 포착한다. 그러므로 방학중 전설은 사회적 모순의 불편한 진실을 비약적 은유로 담아내고 있는 까닭에 웃음을 자아내긴 하지만, 한갓 웃기는 실없는 웃음이 아니라 뼈 있는 웃음이자 인간해방의 진보적 웃음이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study interpreted Bang Hak-Jung recognized as a gangster-type character or trickster as a people’s hero. Moreover, this study investigated why the legend of a “miscellaneous(japbo) character” was funny and where the logic of laughter was, noting a new character called a “miscellaneous character”. In general, a miscellaneous character is regarded as a trickster. People who hand down the story do not get angry at all his deceits, but laugh. Even though they look like tricks to tricked people, people who hear the story of Bang Hak-Jung can not only regard his behaviors as behaviors full of wits but also see his circumstances and the hidden truth called social contradictions. Capturing the relationship between tricks revealed in behaviors and the hidden truth is the new perspective in interpreting the legend of a “miscellaneous character”.
The legend of a “miscellaneous character” is divided into two types according to the content and aesthetic category. It is a tricking and being tricked story in light of the content category. On the other hand, it is a comic story raising laughs in terms of aesthetic categories. In view of a trick story, Bang Hak-Jung is recognized as a trickster who plays a trick on someone even though he has no intention to trick a person and there is no man tricked by him. In terms of aesthetic categories, his resistant behaviors against social contradictions are recognized as jokes. The analytical factor used to encompass the dichotomy between a trick and a comic story and overcome the limitations of both types is the literary metaphor.
Bang Hak-Jung mentions himself as ‘Seodap’ or ‘Tongseodap’ when he was caught by a patrolman as a curfew violator. This is a metaphor of symbolically revealing people’s shabby appearance and resistance awareness. Therefore, the patrolman admires his witty metaphor and meaning and recognizes him as ‘a miscellaneous figure in the world’. One of representative trick stories is the story that he cheats a leaky hut as ‘a house where a blue and a yellow dragon surge’ or ‘his shit as a bird’. In light of the literal metaphor in reality, it is a hyperbolic metaphor caused by paradox and reversal or a dramatic metaphor with the epistemological truth.
In this context, the expression of a shabby house stained by rain water as ‘a house where a blue and a yellow dragon surge’ is a trick. However, it is not a trick at the same time. It looks like a trick because a fact is distorted. It becomes a joke in a literary form because the distortion is a metaphor that the fact is paradoxically exaggerated. Even though the expression of shit as a bird is recognized as a lie, it corresponds to a fairly dramatic metaphor in that people cannot catch shit and a bird with bare hands. However, it is inevitably regarded as a trick because researchers who lack the ability to understand metaphors or legendary people who intend to satisfy their own desires can not understand Bang Hak-Jung’s brilliant metaphors.
Gisaeng(Korean Geisa), classical scholars, officials who are obsessed with unclean desires tend to be tricked because they cannot properly understand his unconventional metaphors. On the other hand, the patrolman, his friends and wife can not only understand his conventional metaphors but also catch his inconvenient truth in his metaphors because they know him very well. Therefore, even though the legend of Bang Hak-Jung raises laughs because the inconvenient truth in social contradictions are expressed through dramatic metaphors, laughs are not silly laughs just for fun, but liberal laughs with serious messages, longing for human liberation.
