This paper investigates aspects of voiceless stop aspiration in American English. Even though cases of voiceless stop aspiration in English are well-studied, cases of optional aspiration, particularly after a consonant, have been hardly examined. Based on the Buckeye corpus, this study specifically focuses on how voiceless stops aspirate after a consonant depending on several variables such as morphological, phonetic, phonological, gender and age factors. Results showed that voiceless stops following a consonant did not accompany as much as voice lags as an aspirated stop that appeared word-initially or before a stressed vowel, but had a little longer VOTs than a corresponding unaspirated stop following [s]. Also, although voiceless stops after a consonant were unaspirated, their VOT values were directly proportional to sonority of the preceding consonant, and places of the voiceless stops also exerted an influence on their VOTs. However, no interactions between gender and VOT, or age and VOT were found. Such an aspect of voiceless stop unaspiration in optional environments can be understood as an effective measure to increase ease of articulation in articulating prosodically weak syllables.
