탈춤에 담긴 웃음문화의 인문학적 가치 (Humanistic Value of the Culture of Laughter in Korean Mask Dance)

초록

탈춤의 웃음을 탈의 조형성과 탈춤의 사설 및 극적 내용에서 찾아 밝힌다. 웃음문화의 전통 속에서 탈춤을 자리매김하는 가운데 탈춤의 웃음을 오늘의 웃음문화로 어떻게 계승할 것인가 하는 문제를 논의한다.
탈의 웃음미학은 웃는 표정이 가장 적극적으로 조형된 하회의 양반탈을 중심으로 다루었다. 입을 여는 입웃음과 눈을 감는 눈웃음으로 분석하여 눈웃음이야 말로 몸과 마음을 여는 진정한 웃음이라는 것이다. 탈은 광대의 얼굴을 가리면서 새로운 인물을 창조하는 변증법적 기능이 있다. 양반탈을 쓴 하인광대가 양반역을 하거나 할미탈을 쓴 남성광대가 여성역을 하는 배역전도 현상이 웃음을 자아낸다. 탈광대와 극중인물 창조 사이의 불일치가 희극적 전도를 일으켜 탈춤의 웃음을 창조한다.
탈춤은 마당극으로서 양방향 소통이 가능하여 웃음의 질이 높다. 탈광대의 웃음을 일방적으로 공유하는 것이 아니라 관중의 개입에 따른 웃음도 공유하게 되는 까닭에 사회적 웃음의 의미가 더 강화된다. 탈춤의 극적 사설에는 언어적 차원의 말놀이 웃음, 성적 표현의 해학적 웃음, 극적 갈등에 따른 풍자적 웃음이 있다. 말놀이 웃음은 비속어와 동음이의어, 유음어에 의한 웃음이 있다. 특히 동음이의어와 유음어가 듣는 사람의 착각이 빚어낸 웃음이라면 비속어는 성적 농담에 따른 웃음이다.
탈춤의 구체적 내용과 상관없이 일관되게 나타나는 것이 성애 담론에서 비롯되는 웃음이다. 성은 근원적으로 풍요다산을 기원하는 풍농굿의 전통과 만나지만, 성을 금기로 여기는 사회에서 적나라한 성의 노출은 그 자체로 웃음을 유발하는 긴요한 수단이다. 굿의 유산을 물려받은 탈춤에서는 성이 사회의 체제 모순을 폭로하는 풍자의 무기가 되는 것이다. 따라서 성을 매개로 노장과 양반, 영감의 위선을 풍자하는 비판적 희극이 탈춤의 미학이다.
풍농굿과 탈춤, 축제의 전통 속에서는 성을 매개로 경제적 풍요와 사회적 풍자, 인간해방의 웃음이 공유된다. 굿과 축제, 탈춤은 물론 혼례와 회갑, 상례 등의 일생의례와 줄타기, 꼭두각시놀음, 민요, 설화 등에서도 웃음문화의 전통이 지속되고 있다. 따라서 민족정서를 한으로 자리매김할 것이 아니라 해학으로 재인식해야 한다.
탈춤의 웃음 전통은 탈과 춤, 풍자의 세 요소를 제대로 계승해야 우리시대 웃음문화로 다시 살아날 수 있다. 탈로서 인물을 창출하고, 춤으로서 몸짓 표현을 하며, 풍자로서 변혁성을 담아낼 때 독창적 웃음문화의 새 지평이 열린다. 닫힌 사회를 열린 사회로 만드는 것이 웃음이자 춤이며 축제이다. 온몸의 웃음이 춤이고 사회적 웃음이 축제이다. 사회적 변혁의 웃음이 인간해방을 이루는 진정한 웃음이자 계승해야 할 인문학적 가치이다.

영어초록

This study identified the laughter in Korean mask dance from the formativeness of masks and the editorials and dramatic contents of Korean mask dance. This study also discusses the issue about the way to inherit the laughter in Korean mask dance as today' culture of laughter while Korean mask dance took its position in the tradition of the culture of laughter.
The aesthetics of laughter in masks was handled based on Yangban (nobleman) masks of Hahoe Village, the smiling expression is moulded most actively. When the open mouth laughter and the eye laughter with closed eyes were analyzed, it was identified that an eye laughter was a true laughter opening mind and body.
The mask has a dialectical function covering a clown's face to create him/her a new figure. The role inversion phenomenon that a servant clown wearing a Yangban mask plays a Yangban's role or a male crown wearing a grandmother mask plays a woman's role makes people laugh. The discrepancy between mask crowns and the creation of characters in the play cause comic inversion to crease the laughter in Korean mask dance.
Korean mask dance enables two-way communication and has the high quality of laughter as a Madang play (traditional Korean outdoor play). The social meaning of laughter become strengthened because the laughter of mask clowns is not unilaterally shared, but the laughter caused by the intervention of the crowd is also shared. There are the laughter from the word play at the linguistic level, the humorous laughter with sexual expressions and the sarcastic laughter caused by dramatic conflicts in the dramatic editorial of Korean mask dance. There are several kinds of laughter caused by slang, homonym and paronym in the laughter from the word play. In particular, the laughter caused by homonym and paronym is burst into according to listeners' illusion, whereas the laughter caused by slang is one burst into due to sexual jokes.
The laughter which is consistently burst into regardless of the details of Korean mask dance is one coming from sexual discourse. Even thous sex can fundamentally be found in the tradition of Pungnonggut (an exorcism for good harvest) praying for richness and fecundity, the naked exposure of sexual discourse is an important means causing laughter by itself. Sex becomes the weapon of satire exposing contradictions in social systems in Korean mask dance inheriting the legacy of Gut. Accordingly, the critical comedy satirizing the hypocrisy of veterans, Yangban and old men with sex as a medium is just the aesthetics of Korean mask dance.
Economic prosperity, social satire and the laughter of human liberation are shared with sex as a medium in the tradition of Pungnonggut, Korean mask dance and festivals. The tradition of the culture of laughter has been maintained in life rituals such as wedding, 60th birthday and funeral rites, tightropes, puppet shows, folk songs, fables and others in addition to gut, festivals and Korean mask dance.
Therefore, it is needed to re-recognize national emotion as humor, not resentment.
The tradition of laughter in Korean mask dance can be brought back as the culture of laughter these days when three elements, masks, dances and satire, are inherited properly. When the figures are created through masks, gestures and motions are expressed through dances and reform initiative is contained as satire, the new horizon for the creative culture of laughter can open. Changing a closed society to an open society is laughter, dances and festivals. Whole body laughter is a dance and social laughter is a festival. The laughter for social change is not only a true laughter to achieve human liberation but also the humanistic value necessary to be inherited.
