검은색 죽음 상징이 현대 한국 장례에 미친 영향 (The Impact of Black as a Symbol of Death on Modern Funerals)

초록

현대 장례식장에서 사용되는 검은색 죽음 상징의 역사를 찾는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 동아시아의 죽음 상징색이 검은색으로 바뀐 것은 일본 메이지 정부가 추구한 서구화 정책의 결과이다. 1872년 ‘대례복 규정’부터 서양의 검은 예복을 일본의 예복 제도로 수용하면서 일본의 죽음 상징색은 검은색으로 바뀌었다.
한국에서는 1895년 ‘무관표상식’, 1900년 ‘문관복장규칙’을 제정하면서, 서양식 예복 제도를 도입하면서 죽은 상징색도 검은색으로 바뀌었다. 민간에서는 기독교의 영향과 일제 식민지 정책으로 흰색이었던 죽음 상징색이 검은색으로 바뀐다. 장례에서 검은색은 상복, 상장, 영정사진의 리본에 적용되면서 죽음 상징색이 된다. 일제강점기에 강제 이식된 검은색 죽음 상징은 해방 후 독립운동가 등 사회 저명인사의 장례식에도 등장한다. 이는 일본식 장의사(葬儀社)의 영향이다.
현대 장례식장의 검은색 죽음 상징은 검은색의 상복, 영정사진의 리본, 상주 리본, 완장에 적용되어 있다. 상주를 표시하는 상복에 상장과 완장을 덧붙이거나, 고인을 나타내는 영정사진에 리본을 붙이는 것은 의미의 중복이다. 특히 고인을 표상하는 영정사진, 혼백, 위패를 함께 모시는 것은 의미의 중복이자 심각한 왜곡이다.
현재 한국의 검은색 죽음 상징은 일제강점기에 강제 이식된 것이다. 여기에 천민자본주의와 맥락을 같이 하는 한국 장례 산업의 장례 자본주의 영향도 크다. 검은색 죽음 상징을 이윤 추구의 대상으로 삼는 장례 자본주의는 장례의 과정이나 상징, 의미 체계를 뒤흔들어 놓았다. 한 마디로 의례의 형식화를 부추겼다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to explore the history of the symbolism of black as a color of death in modern funeral practices. The shift to black as the color symbolizing death in East Asia is a result of the Westernization policies pursued by Japan’s Meiji government. Beginning with the 1872 Ceremonial Dress Code, Japan adopted Western black formal dress into its official dress codes, thereby transforming black into the color associated with death.
In Korea, with the establishment of the 1895 Military Official Dress Code (무관표상식) and the 1900 Civil Official Dress Code (문관복장규칙), the adoption of Western-style ceremonial dress also led to the adoption of black as the color symbolizing death. In the civilian sector, under the influence of Christianity and Japanese colonial policies, the traditional white color associated with death was replaced by black. In funerals, black came to be used in mourning dress, mourning badges, and the ribbons on funeral portrait photos of the deceased, further solidifying its association with death. The black symbolism of death, forcibly implanted during the Japanese colonial period, reappeared even after liberation in the funerals of notable figures such as independence activists, influenced by the Japanese-style funeral directors (葬儀社).
In modern funeral practices, the symbolism of black is applied to mourning dress, the ribbon on the funeral portrait photos, the chief mourner’s ribbon, and armbands. The addition of a mourning badge or armband to the mourning dress worn by the mourners, or the attachment of a ribbon to the funeral portrait photos representing the deceased, represents a redundancy of meaning. Moreover, the simultaneous inclusion of the funeral portrait photos, spirit tablet, and ancestral tablet in funeral rites leads to a redundancy of symbols and a significant distortion of meaning.
The current symbolism of black in death in Korea was forcibly implanted during the Japanese colonial period. This phenomenon has been further exacerbated by the influence of the funeral industry in Korea, which operates within the framework of pariah capitalism. This “funeral capitalism,” which commodifies the symbolism of black as a color of death for profit, has disrupted the process, symbols, and meaning systems of traditional funeral rituals. In essence, it has contributed to the formalization of rituals.
