티베트의 죽음 이해 -천장(天葬)을 중심으로- (Understanding Death Culture of Tibet -Taking the Example of Sky Burial-)

초록

고대로부터 티베트인들은 생명체의 태어남을(生) 자유로이 주관할 수는 없지만, 죽음은 스스로의 노력 혹은 법력이 있는 타인의 능력을 빌어 생명의 종결을 의미 있게 연장 할 수 있다고 믿었다. 이는 인간의 죽음은 단순한 생명의 종결만을 의미하지 않고 모든 존재는 영혼을 갖고 있으며 그 영혼은 죽음에 따라 소멸되는 것이 아니라 다른 세상으로 순환된다고 여겼기 때문이다. 이러한 관념은 죽음에 이르러서는 현생의 업(業)을 정화할 수 있고 심지어 내생(來生)까지도 설계(환생)할 수 있다는 영혼의 전세(轉世)사상을 받아들였기 때문이다. 이는 티베트인들이 신뢰하는 윤회(輪廻)와 환생(還生)의 기본구도이기도 하며 이러한 영혼불사의 사상은 결국 티베트 상장(喪葬)관습의 기원과 발전의 영향을 주었다.
본문은 티베트의 이러한 사유(思惟)와 전통을 이해하면서 오늘날까지 티베트인들이 보편적으로 진행하고 있는 천장(天葬)이라는 장법(葬法)을 이해하고자 한다. 천장(天葬)은 망자(亡者)의 시체를 천장사(天葬師)라는 특정한 라마승(수행승)이 칼과 도끼로 해부하고 다듬어서 천국의 사자(使者)인 독수리에게 모두 보시하는 장법(葬法)이다. 본문은 이러한 천장의식의 탐구를 통하여 티베트만의 독특한 죽음인식과 의례 그리고 삶을 추적하였다.

영어초록

The Tibet ethnic group, among the 55 minority groups in China, is known to have maintained a very different and unique world of thoughts and a bier funeral ceremony. For example, four traditional funeral methods, which are sea burial, cremation, sky burial, and tower burial, have been inherited, continuing to this day, and the contents and ceremony procedures are extremely primeval and religious. Tibetan people have formed a very unique thought system regarding ‘death’ from the ancient times. They focused on the invisible mental sector called ‘immortal spirit’ in the relationship between the spirit and physical body of human. Thus, they believed that once a human ceases to breath, a professional sorcerer should separate the spirit and the corpse in its entirety within a certain period of time so that the spirit may ‘transfer’ to another living being. This belief is also the basic composition of reincarnation acknowledged by Tibetan people. By taking into mind such thought methods of Tibetan people, this Research seeks to understand the Tibetan people’s perception of death through the sky burial ceremony that is universally conducted to this day. The funeral culture of sky burial is a traditional behavioral ceremony explicitly showing the Tibetan people’s view on life and death and perception on spirit. Tibetan people trim the corpse of a human, that is merely a shell, with a knife and elaborately dissect the corpse, and freely provides it to eagles, which are the envoys of heaven. Such primeval religious ceremony is held by a lama of a temple, who is the sky burial master. The more surprising fact is that, despite the temporal and spacial restrictions of approximately a thousand years, this traditional behavioral ceremony continues to this day. The author has studied the sky burial ceremony of Tibet every year at the field from 2005 to 2013 (a total of ten times) and conducted interviews. This Article is based on the visits and studies on the sky burial ceremony conducted at the Jeul-Gung Temple at the Tibet Autonomous Region in 2005.
