情死-사랑과 죽음에 대한 근세 일본의 幻像 (The Love Suicide - Early Modern Japan's Fantasy of Love and Death)

초록

본고는 17, 8세기 일본에 불어닥쳤던 정사문화의 실상을 파악하고 지카마쓰 몬자에몬의 희곡작품을 통하여 사랑과 죽음에 대한 근세 일본인의 인식을 구명해 보고자 구상되었다. 필자는 먼저 『色道大鏡』(1678년)을 통하여 근세 유흥공간에 나타난 신주의 양상에 주목하였다. 여기서 신주는 사랑하는 남녀가 자신의 사랑을 증명하기 위해 서약서를 쓰고, 머리카락을 자르고, 문신을 하고, 손톱을 뽑고, 손가락을 자르다 결국엔 자신의 목숨을 던지는 것으로 비약해 나가는 과정을 보여주고 있다. 이는 정사 문화가 사랑이란 명분하에 자신의 고통을 증폭시키는 자기 학대적 과정의 최종 도달점임을 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다. 이를 바탕으로 본고 3장에서는 상품화된 성과 오락이 된 연애 문화 속에서 근세의 사랑이 정사라는 죽음의 유희에 사로잡혔음을 논하였다.
본고에서는 지카마쓰 정사극을 이제까지 ‘사랑의 찬미극’으로 평가하는 데 대해 ‘죽음의 찬미극’으로 새롭게 해석하고자 하였다. 특히 그의 작품에서 보이는 선명하게 붉은 피의 이미지가 죽음에 대한 강렬하고도 선정적인 이미지를 증폭시키며 탐미적 수준으로 고양되어 가는 과정을 살펴보았다. 또한 그 이면에 일본 특유의 죽음에 대한 열광과 도취의 역사가 내재하고 있음을 논하였다.
본고에서는 일본의 정사 문화를, 프로이트의 ‘타나토스 이론’에 기대어 ‘성적 에너지로서의 에로스가 죽음의 근원적 욕망인 타나토스를 향해 달린 질주’로 해석하였다.

영어초록

The sex and the love appear in different forms in accordance with political, legal, social and cultural environment of the time. The scenery of the love in the early modern times in Japan showed explosive admiration and indulgence for the sexual love in various urban entertainment venues. However, the paternalist family system which became more concrete was suppressing and persecuting the sex even more. In such contradictory social environment, the crippled sexual love culture and the misfortunate love affairs were born, and these derived double suicides boomed.
At first this article grasps the real image of the love suicide as social phenomena, and, in order to clarify the essence of the modern culture of sex affairs, pays attention to double suicide culture in the pleasure space in the early modern times based on "the male homosexuality size mirror" published in 1678. Here, the double suicide shows the process in which a man and a woman in a love affair, exchange of pledges, remove their fingernails, cut off their fingers, and finally throw away their lives to prove their love. Double suicide namely the love suicide is the final destination of a process in which one maximize his or her suffering for love. In the love culture that became the commercialized sex and entertainment, the early modern love was taken in a game of the death called the double suicide.
The early modern culture quickly caught such social phenomena, and created the drama of love and death rare in world literary art history. The clearly clammy bloody image appearing in a double suicide drama of Monzaemon Chikamatsu amplifies the strong and sensual image and enhances it upto the aesthetic level. And, it agitated early modern youth with strong temtation.
The love suicide as the realization of tempting death is regarded as the ultimate end of mysterious masochistic trend that Freud asserted. The violent wind of the love suicide blowing out in the early modern times was Eros's galloping toward Thanatos, the intrinsic desire toward death. The early modern Japanese literary art affirmed and praised the physical and sensual human desire, and at the same time was gazing at deficiency, anxiety, and violence derived from it. Additionally, through the innate desire of love and death, the question of "what a human being is" was ceaselessly asked.
