초록

This paper examines Mircea Eliade's unconsciousness and tine founded in his novel, Youth without Youth from an analytical psychological perspective. In this novel, unconsciousness invades into human consciousness in several events. Dominic Matei, an old man became young by sudden lightning on Easter and began his long journey to seek for the origin of time and consciousness. He met his first lover who died and was born again as a different woman. Connecting Christian time and space with Hindu ideas of reincarnation and avatar, Eliade reminds his readers of the importance of meanings in the circle of life and death.
The background of this novel is clearly related with the 1938's Rumanian political turmoil, when Eliade was arrested due to the suspicion as member of the Iron Guard, a far-right religious nationalist movement for the renewal of Rumanian culture. In order to endure the sufferings from terrors of history, Dominic escaped from hands of political leaders and scientists. He kept to communicate with his unconscious self, so-called, double and finally realized the power of new humanism. After enlightened, he died without any fear, hoping for the next world.
In conclusion, we should reconsider his religious novels and history of religions by exploring his journals and autobiographies. Though Jung's analytical psychology can't explain all dimensions of Eliade's system, it is one of good tools which we can use to understand his literary imagination in Youth without Youth.
