청소년소설에 나타난 죽음 표상 연구 (A Study on the Representation of Death in Juvenile Novels)

초록

본 논문은 청소년소설에서 빈번히 등장하고 있는 ‘죽음’이라는 문제에 주목하여, 소설에서 죽음이 어떻게 형상화되고 있으며, 어떠한 방식으로 주제를 전달하고 있는지 고찰해 보았다. 죽음은 인간의 본질을 규정하는 필수적인 요소이기 때문에 주체를 형성해가는 청소년들이 반드시 고민해 보아야 할 실존적 문제이자 생의 가치를 되새김하게 하는 중요한 사건이다. 그러나 예민한 청소년들을 주 독자로 하는 청소년소설에서는 자살이나 죽음의형상화 방식에 신중을 기할 필요가 있다.
먼저 자살을 다루고 있는 소설에서는 청소년들이 실제로 겪을 수 있는 왕따, 부모와의 불화, 성적 문제 등 다양한 파국 상황인 에셰크(échec)를 구체적으로 보여주고 있다. 자살 충동을 느끼는 주체를 서술자로 내세워 이들이 겪는 상처와 고통, 그리고 삶과 죽음에 대한 양가적 욕망을 드러냄으로써 독자들이 이들의 상황에 공감하도록 한다. 또한 자살에 대한 진지한 성찰을 하게 하고, 나아가 생명의 소중함을 일깨우는 계몽적인 주제를 제시하는 경우가 대부분이다. 이러한 소설은 파토스적 상황을 대리체험하게 함으로써 청소년 독자가 자신이 처한 문제를 객관적으로 성찰하고 이를극복할 수 있도록 도와주며, 아울러 이들을 위로하며 감정의 정화를 가져오게 한다.
그리고 주변인의 죽음을 다룬 소설에서는 죽음에 대한 성찰과 애도가중요하게 다루어지고 있다. 이들 소설에서는 가족이나 친구의 죽음으로 충격을 받은 청소년 서술자가 죽음의 의미를 밝히고, 대상의 상실을 주체의삶에 정상적으로 안착시키는 ‘애도 작업(work of mourning)’을 하도록 도와준다. 특히 타인의 죽음을 다룬 소설들은 ‘죽음의 이야기’와 그 죽음의 비밀을 밝히는 ‘조사의 이야기’를 배치하여 죽음의 진실에 접근해 간다는 점에서 추리소설의 서사 기법을 차용했다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 탐색의 과정은 서사의 긴장감을 유지시키며 이야기의 흥미를 높이는 한편, 독자가 죽음에 대해 진지하게 성찰할 수 있도록 한다. 또한 이 과정에서 청소년 인물들이 불화하던 세계와 화해하고, 인생의 의미를 깨달아 가는 성장을 경험하게 된다.
청소년소설에 나타난 죽음이라는 소재는 청소년이 어른으로 성장해가는하나의 통과제의로 나타난다. 많은 청소년소설에서는 주변 인물들과의 연대의식을 통해 죽음을 애도하고, 그 혼란을 건강하게 극복하는 모습을 그리고 있다. 몇몇 소설에서는 작위적인 갈등 해결이나 역경 극복담을 통해 지나치게 계몽적인 주제의식을 드러내기도 하지만, 이들 소설은 죽음이라는 문제를 정면으로 다룸으로써 청소년문학이 지닌 가능성의 지평을 넓히고 있다.

영어초록

By paying attention to ‘death’, frequently appearing in the Juvenile Novels, this thesis investigated how death is embodied in novel and how the theme is delivered in it. As death is the essential element that defines human nature, it is the existential issue that the adolescents who are forming their identity must agonize and the important incident for them to ruminate the value of life. However, the juvenile novel that targets sensitive young people needs to be careful about the way of embodying suicide or death.
First, novels dealing with suicide specifically show échec, various catastrophic situations, such as outcast, discord with their parents and poor grade. By putting as a narrator the agent feeling suicidal to express their scars and pains and their ambivalent desire of death and life, the novels make readers sympathize with the character’s situation.
These novels also mostly propose to sincerely introspect suicide, and furthermore, present enlightening themes awakening preciousness of life.
These novels console readers and help their emotion purified by giving them the vicarious experience of the pathetic situation. These novels also help young people objectively reflect their circumstances and overcome them.
Novels dealing with death of people around adolescents regard introspection and mourning of death importantly. These novels help the adolescent narrator shocked by death of their family or friend find out the meaning of death and do ‘the work of mourning’that normally settle down the loss of the object to the life of the agent. Particularly, novels dealing with other’s death may be seen borrowing the narrative skill of the detective story, in that they arrange ‘the story of death’and ‘the story of investigation’that reveals secrets of the death, to access the truth of death. Maintaining tensions of narration and raising interest in the story, this search process helps readers feel a mental connection with people around them and sincerely reflect death.
The material of death appearing in the juvenile novels is expressed as one of the passage rites necessary for them to grow up to manhood. Many juvenile novels describe that young people mourn death through the sense of belong together with people around them and that they overcome the feelings healthily. Although some novels reveal extremely enlightening themes through contrived solution of conflict or conquest of adversity, these novels broaden horizons of possibility of adolescent fiction, by squarely dealing with the matter of death.
