A Study of Ritual Hermeneutics about Trinitarian Language in the Light of Cross-Cultural Hermeneutics

This paper intends to present the transformational-empowering possibilities of cross-cultural hermeneutics on the Trinitarian language toward ritual hermeneutics on Trinitarian language. Cross-cultural means the reciprocal interpretive movement from a certain culture to another culture. It also means making an effort to understand how the perspectives and experiences of the other culture differ from one’s own.
The different cultural experiences and perspectives produce different interpretations, which are to be valued and respected. Cross-cultural hermeneutics does not seek a unified Meaning by conquering others who are alien, different, or weak. Cross-cultural hermeneutics affirms diversity, yet it requires critical engagement of different cultures. Particularly, the critical engagement of different cultures includes unavoidable decisions about which interpretations are appropriate and what criteria should govern such decisions.
The cross-cultural hermeneutics of the Trinitarian language as a critical reflection on hermeneutics is articulated in two synchronized dynamic movements of interpretation: diversifying Meaning of the Trinitarian language and harmonizing meanings of the Trinitarian language.
It is also important to note that the Trinitarian language-event does not always occur every time the Trinitarian language is spoken. However, one of the certainties I have in developing the main themes of the paper is that authentic cross-cultural hermeneutics about the Trinitarian language can let the Trinitarian language be “the House of Trinitarian Being” across different cultures in the event of communal relationships where the Triune God is worshipped in terms of the Trinitarian language. Namely, the worshiping communal relationship can be the event of time and place where the authentic hermeneutics of the Trinitarian language can happen. For this reason, I draw attention to the performance character of Trinitarian language in ritual narrative and participation in which fixed identities and relationships are eventually transformed as participants submit their identities to the divine.
