My fundamental assumption is that Christ’s teaching has universal relevance for all human spiritual maladies. This means, arguably, that if some common causes for a particular illness are identified, our perspective can become sharper on how Christ’s prescription may be pointedly applied and appropriated against the deepest human flaws to heal the disease. Therefore, I shall identify some common causes of suicide among teenagers in Korea, and then show how some principle teachings in the Sermon can effectively replace those causes.
As a way of diagnosing the “at risk” Korean adolescents (i.e., suicidal youths undergoing personal/relational alienation), I first present a few common causes that drive these youngsters toward despair and suicide. Second, I ask, “how can Christians achieve some measure of health before they can influence the society?” This question assumes that the Sermon must first address and be applied to the church before applying secondarily to those drawn to become followers of Christ.
Third, I seek to identify some key principles which Christ seem to propound in the Sermon as strategies for renovating the human person, principles which should also offset and replace those harmful causes that weaken the youngsters’ health in the first place. While identifying these principles with analogous life situations is somewhat arbitrary, recognizing the nature of these principles’ stark contrast to the harmful causes of “at risk” adolescents would be a self-evident measure of verification. Once these essential principles are identified, the church can more intentionally focus on them to nurture the young generation of Christians to become healthy agents for change in society in the days ahead.
