바울이 아라비아로 간 까닭은?: 갈라디아서 1:17에 나타난 바울의 선지자적 자의식" ("Why Did Paul Go to Arabia?: Paul's Prophetic Self-Understanding Revealed in Galatians 1:17")

초록

바울은 갈 1:17에서 다메섹 경험 직후 예루살렘으로 돌아가지 않고 곧 바로 아라비아로 갔다가 그곳에서 한 동안 머문 뒤 다시 다메섹으로 돌아갔다고 말한다. 바울은 왜 개종 직후 다른 곳이 아닌 아라비아로 갔을까? 이 글은 바울이 이사야서의 예언을 매우 독특한 방식으로 자신의 소명사건과 연결시켜 해석했기 때문에 아라비아에 갔다는 가설 하에 그 개연성을 탐구한다. 바울이 이사야서의 특정 구절들을 자신의 다메섹 경험과 연결해서 해석할 때 그는 자신을 이사야서의 "주의 종(the Servant of the Lord)"과 일치시킨 것으로 보인다. 바울은 자신을 구약성경의 선지자들의 전통 위에 세웠고, 그래서 바울의 사도적 자기이해(Paul's apostolic self-understanding) 안에는 선지자적 자의식(自意識)이 포함되어 있었다. 필자는 이 연구에서 그가 다메섹 사건 직후 아라비아로 간 이유를 밝힘과 동시에 그의 아라비아 선교의 이면에 있는 선지자적 자의식에 대해서도 함께 살펴보려고 한다.

영어초록

According to Gal 1:17, Paul did not go back to Jerusalem but left for Arabia right after his Damascus experience. He stayed in Arabia for a while, and then returned to Damascus. Why did he go to anywhere else but Arabia? In this study a proposition is explored that Paul understood some prophetic texts of Isaiah in a quite unique fashion, relating them to his own Damascusexperience. Isa 42:11 and 60:7 provide critical information regarding the demographic characteristics of Arabia as Roman province in the first century. The descendents of Ishmael, son of Abraham through a slave girl, residedthere. Isa 60:1-7 is another key text gives a critical insight to Paul's critical turning from Jewish understanding of sacrifices of animals to Christian understanding of sacrifices of living human beings, sanctified by the Spirit. However, a series of significant prophetic texts that played important roles in the formulation of Paul's prophetic self-understanding mainly come from Isa 66. Isa 66:20-21, as already well understood in scholarly circles, is employed by Paul in Rom 15:16 to give his own job-description. Paul decided his geographical framework of mission in accordance to Isa 66:19, as Reiner Riesner has demonstrated in his research. Isa 60:7-9 is another text that helps us explain why Paul went to Arabia first, and then Cilicia. The significance of Isa 66 can be again attested by Isa 66:7-13. This text reveals why Paul understood himself as a child-giving woman and breast-feeding nursing mother. Finally, in Isa 66:1-3 we can find some crucial information that would have given Paul a deep insight to his recognition of the church as God’s new temple, subsequently himself as its priest. It appears that Paul identified himself with the Servant of the Lord in Isaiah 40-66. Paul placed himself in the prophetic line of the Old Testament. Paul went to Arabia to preach the gospel he had received from his Damascus event to the descendents of Ishmael in compliance to the prophecies in Isaiah to make them God's acceptable sacrifices to the altar of the church, which is God's new temple.
