Yoga Ecology, having been formed around 2000, is a theoretical and practical ‘Applied Yoga’ which reconstructs and reinterprets a variety of Yoga traditions as an ecological discourse. In this article, a few questions of the following are to be asked with regard to Yoga Ecology, and in replying to those questions it could lead to realistic and specific perspectives for Yoga Ecology to some extent.
Firstly, is Yoga eco-friendly to be sure? As a matter of fact, Yoga traditions in India that are extremely ‘liberation-oriented’ basically relate to a negative attitude toward the natural world. Accordingly, it is necessary to secure an interpretation that Yoga acknowledges the physical world of continuous change before everything else in order to make possible Yoga Ecology. In this way some scholars of Yoga present recently some tangible results that a world view of Yoga could be eco-friendly. Secondly, what is an exclusive domain of Yoga Ecology? This question is connected to the fact that Yoga Ecology can assure its own domain in the future even though It is mainly regarded to be subordinated to Hindu Ecology at present. In response two points of the following can be taken into consideration: Yoga Ecology has abundant contents in its inner side, and It can provide more universal teachings than Hindu Ecology in its outer side. Thirdly, what can Yoga Ecology speak? To be an independent Ecology, Yoga Ecology must provide a concrete perspectives on Ecology through that very Yoga. Of course, those perspectives are already provided variously in the circle of Yoga studies. Nonetheless, it is necessary to find out a certain perspective that can include all the Yoga traditions, that can be with direct ties to inherent teachings of Yoga, and that can be well associated with various structural elements of Ecology. Consequently, it may be suggested that the concept of ‘purification’ is suitable for Yoga Ecology as the main principle. After all, there are a lot of problems to be solved in Yoga Ecology to become a competitive area. However Yoga Ecology can be deeply rooted as an ‘Academic’ Ecology, if It utilizes well all the advantages while establishing differential contents in accompany to the Yoga traditions.
