CCM에 나타난 [인생은 여행] 은유 연구 (A Study on LIFE IS A JOURNEY Metaphor Expressed in CCM)

초록

본 연구는 CCM에 나타난 [인생은 여행] 은유를 하위분류하고 그 특성을 분석함으로써 보편적 은유가 특정한 언어 공동체의 세계관과 결합했을 때 만들어지는 특수성을 살핀 것이다. 분석 결과 ‘삶의 주체는 여행자’, ‘삶의 과정은 길’, ‘조언자(절대자)는 가이드’, ‘선택점은 갈림길’, ‘일상은 도보’와 같은 하위 은유를 정리하였고, 이를 바탕으로 CCM에서 역시 [인생은 여행]이라는 보편적 은유가 통용됨을 확인하였다.
한편 위 은유는 다음과 같은 세 가지 특수성을 보였다. 첫째, ‘가이드’가 절대적인 존재로 나타난다. 둘째, ‘길’은 가치 판단의 대상이며 이분법적으로 나뉜다. 셋째, 미래의 ‘목적지’와 관련된 표현은 절제된 반면, 현재와 관련된 ‘도보’ 표현은 빈출하였다. 이는 각각 인생이란 절대자에게 의탁하지 않고는 지속되기 어렵다는 점, 신앙인은 신앙 양심에 부합하는 결정을 내리기를 요구받으며 따라서 인생의 선택지는 옳은 것과 그른 것으로 양분되어 인식될 수 있다는 점, 인생에 대한 인지에서 당면한 삶의 현장이 초점을 받고 있다는 점을 함의한다.
본고에서는 [인생은 여행]이라는 보편적 은유에 가미된 특수성을 통해 동시대 기독교 공동체의 신앙관에 부합하는 나름의 인지 체계가 성립하는 것을 확인하였다. 다만 인생의 구성 요소 중 ‘목적지’에 대응시킬 만한 것을 정하기 어렵다는 문제가 있으므로 추후 여행 사건의 원형에 대해서 고찰해 볼 것을 제안한다. 앞으로도 다양한 가치관, 세계관을 매개로 한 인지언어학 연구가 이루어짐으로써, 언어뿐만 아니라 동시대를 살아가는 타자에 대한 이해까지도 넓혀갈 수 있게 되기를 바란다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to subclassify and analyze the characteristics of ‘LIFE IS A JOURNEY’ in CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) in order to examine the features created by the conceptual metaphor in the perspective of Christian community. This study used the lyrics of 91 popular CCMs in Melon chart (the most frequently used music platform in South Korea) between 2017 and 2018.
The results showed mapping of ‘LIFE IS A JOURNEY’ as follows: ‘Individuals are travelers’, ‘Phases in life are routes’, ‘The counselor is a guide’, ‘The moment of choice is a crossroad’, and ‘Living is walking.’ However the actual realization of this metaphor in CCM has three features. First, the ‘guide’ plays an essential role in the traveler’s life not only as a guide but also as a guardian and companion forming intimate relationships with travelers. Regarding the fact that counselors indicates God in the lyrics, it is inferred that God’s existence has been an indispensable part of Christians’ view of life. Secondly, various ‘routes’ that travelers encounter turn out to be classified into two types: the route they should follow and the other that they should not follow. This implies that, to Christians, the moment of decision making in their lives is not value-neutral. It is rather understood as the moment when they have to choose between right and wrong according to their religious conscience. Thirdly, while the ‘destination’ of journey was barely expressed in the lyrics, expressions related to ‘walking’ frequently appeared. It may be interpreted that people focus more on the present daily life than the future afterlife. However, relatively sparse occurrence of the expressions corresponding to ‘destination’ may be due to the fact that it is difficult to pick one adequate element of life which corresponds to ‘destination’ of journey. Therefore, the prototype of journey remains the subject of further study.
Based on the above framework, this study found that Christians use conceptual journey metaphors as well, but by adding additional features to some elements and using some elements more or less, they are building their own cognitive system that conforms to their view of the world. This paper has a limitation that it analyzed the religious language only in the form of CCMs. However, it has an implication in doing metaphor research regarding social community sharing specific value and worldview. This research hopes to shed light on the expansion of cognitive linguistics research regarding social context so that it would deepen not only the understandings of metaphors but also understandings of others living at the same time, in the same society.
