공간 체험 메커니즘을 통한 관계적 미학 연구- 본인의 공간 실험 작품을 중심으로 한 융복합 연구 - (A Study on the Relational Aesthetics through Spatial Experimental Installation Works -Convergence Research Focusing on Spatial Experiment Works-)

초록

본 논문은 작품논문으로 프랑스 예술 비평가이자큐레이터인 니꼴라 부리요(Nicolas Bourriaud)가 그의저서를 통해 정립한 관계 미학을 실재하는 공간 실험설치 작품을 통해 확인하고 이해하는 탐구 과정에 대한 것이다.
관람객들은 본 연구자가 설치해 둔 체험 메커니즘에 우발적으로 체험·참여하게 된다. 관람객들이 작품에 참여하는 과정을 통해 눈에 보이지 않는 이론으로만 존재하는 관계의 미학을 스스로 이해하게 유도하는 것이 공간 실험 작품의 목적이다.
본 연구의 내용은 다음과 같은 과정으로 진행되었다. 첫째, 서론에서 연구의 배경 및 범위에 관해 설명하였다. 본고에서는 현대 미술의 체험과 참여라는 관람자의 역할 변화에 주목하였다. 과거 전통 미학으로는 설명하거나 비평하기 어려운 현대 미술의 작품 경향을 이해하기 위해서는 시대 변화에 맞는 새로운 이론이 필요하며 이는 부리요의 관계적 미학을 통해 가능하다는 사실을 언급하였다. 또한 관계 미학이라는개념을 체험·참여를 통해 관람자들이 직접 이해할 수있도록 유도하는 체험 메커니즘을 설치작품으로 한공간 실험을 실시하였다는 사실을 밝혔다. 작품의 범위는 철학적 사유와 개념을 빛과 색의 메커니즘을 통해 이해하도록 유도했던 트리플익스프레션(Triple expression)의 연작이며 연구자의 두 단체전을 범위로하였다.
둘째, 관계 미학의 이론적 고찰을 실시하였다. 먼저전통적인 미학이 적용되던 근대 화이트큐브 시대 미술과 관계적 미학 시대의 현대 미술의 특징을 도출하여 비교 분석하였다. 또한 현대 미술이 지각적 체험성과 참여성이라는 특성을 갖게 된 기본적인 철학적 근거를 현상학을 통해 제시하였으며 이것이 어떻게 관계적 미학이 발전되도록 뒷받침을 했는지 설명하였다.
그리고 시간성이 더해진 현대 작품이 전통적 미학 이론으로 설명되지 못하여 관계 미학이라는 이론이 생성되고 발전된 경위를 살폈다. 마지막으로 우발적 체험참여로 인해 만들어지는 마이크로 커뮤니티에 대해이해하고 이것이 관계적 미학에서 어떤 의미가 있는지를 언급하였다.
셋째, 앞서 제시한 이론적 근거를 바탕으로 하여 전시와 작품의 프로세스를 기법적 전개 양상과 개념적전개 양상으로 구분하여 설명하였다. 기법적 전개는관계 미학이라는 개념을 체험·참여를 통해 관람자들이 직접 이해할 수 있도록 빛과 색을 사용한 체험의메커니즘을 설치하여 공간 실험을 실시하였다. 개념적전개 양상은 관계 미학에 관한 것이며 관계 미학이발전되는데 큰 영향을 미쳤다고 판단되는 지각의 현상학에 대한 개념도 함께 언급하였다.
본 논문은 글로 설명되는 미학 이론이 체험이 동반된 실제 작품으로 해석되었다는 점에서 방법론적 융합을 살펴볼 수 있다. 또한 이론으로만 존재하여 이해하기 어려웠던 관계적 미학의 내용을 관람자들(체험자들)이 빛과 색이라는 설치 작품을 통해 직접 지각적으로 느끼고 이해할 수 있는 계기를 마련했다는 점에서도 본 작품논문의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper is discussing exploration process to recognize and understand the relational aesthetics (which Nicolas Bourriaud, a French art critic and curator, defined in his book) through a space experimentation installation work where visitors are unintentionally exposed to experience and participate in the experience mechanism that the author has established. The purpose of the work is to make visitors to better understand the relational aesthetics (which exists only as an invisible theory) thru a participation, importantly by themselves. This research was conducted with the following process and scope.
First, the introduction describes background and scope of the study. In particular, it is focused on role changes of visitors who experience and participate in contemporary art. It further discusses that (i) a new theory is needed to understand recent art tendencies which cannot be explained nor criticized by traditional art, but (ii) Bourriaud's relational aesthetics can explain such tendencies. In addition, a brief mentioning was provided on the space experimentation work for an experiencing mechanism which makes visitors to experience and participate for an better understanding on the relational aesthetics. The paper is based on two consecutive works of ‘Triple Expression’ (aiming at understanding of philosophical thoughts and concepts through the mechanism of light and color) as a part of two group exhibitions.
Second, an theoretical investigation in the relational aesthetics was done. (a) analyzed and compared a set of characteristics of both the art in the modern white cube era and the contemporary art in the relational aesthetics era. (b) The presented basic philosophical basis on why the modern art contains some characteristics related to perceptual experience and participation in a phenomenology point of view, and explained how it supported an evolution towards the relational aesthetics. © explained why contemporary works with the characteristics of time were not explained by traditional esthetics, therefore the theory of the relation art was shaped and developed. (d) discussed the micro-community created by an accidental, unintended participation as well as its meaning in the relational aesthetics.
Third, based on the theoretical bases explained in the previous sections, the author presented the process of the works and exhibitions in two aspects, a methodological development aspect and a conceptual development aspect. In the methodological development aspect, the author explained how the space experiment based on an installation mechanism utilizing light and color, made visitors to deeper understand the concept of the relational aesthetics through an experience and participation process. In the conceptual development aspect, which is ultimately related to the relational aesthetics, the author I further explained the concept of perceptual phenomenology that is considered to have had a great influence to the development of the relational aesthetics.
The contribution of this paper is : First, in a broader sense, this research is a result of methodological convergence in that an art theory typically described in text, was realized as a real-world work. Second, this research is particularly meaningful because it provided an opportunity for visitors or experienced people to better perceive the relational aesthetics (which is considered to be difficult, existing as a theory)through an installation work using light and color, involving direct sensing, feeling and understanding.
