카를 융의 심리학적 성서 해석 (Jung’s Psychological Interpretation of the Bible)

초록

이 글에서는 심리학과 신학이 서로 대립하지 않고 사람들을 인간적이 되게 하기 위하여 서로 협력할 수 있는 가능성을 모색하려고 한다. 융은 성서비평학의 튼튼한 기초 위에 서 있을 뿐 아니라 심리학의 이론들과 현상학적 방법들을 동원하여 성서가 갖고 있는 무궁무진한 힘과 상징 그리고 무의식의 차원들을 밝혀내려고 한다. 그리하여 융은 우리로 하여금 교조주의적 해석에 빠지지 않고, 성서가 우리를 해석하는 기쁨을 맛보게 해준다.
융은 성서의 이원론적 용어들과 상징어들에 주목하며 이원론적 용어들에서는 선과 악을 양자택일적으로 선택할 수 없는 복잡한 인간의 상황을 해석해내고 성서에서 대극의 통합을 찾으려고 한다. 또한 심리학은 인간이 의식만으로 살려고 할 때 병이 든다고 보며 무의식적인 것들 즉 그림자를 통합할 때에 전인적 인간이 된다고 본다. 융은 성서야말로 바로 이러한 무의식을 잘 드러내는 상징들로 가득하다고 보며 성서는 무의식의 책이라고 본다. 그리스의 신들이 일반적 신의 특징들을 잘 나타낸다면 야훼는 그와는 다른 무의식적인 특성을 많이 나타내는 점도 성서가 지니는 무의식적 면의 하나이다.
융에 따르면 욥은 이런 야훼의 무의식성과 대면하면서 인간의 의식으로 측정할 수 없는 하나님을 만나게 된다. 야곱은 아버지와 형을 속인 속임수로 라반에게 똑같이 당함으로써 자기의 그림자를 직면하게 되고 통합하게 된다. 얍복강의 씨름은 이전 자아 야곱을 극복하고 무의식적인 것까지 통합한 새로운 자기인 이스라엘이 되는 것을 보여준다. 이러한 것은 성서의 지혜문학에서 또한 소피아를 통합하는 삶으로 나타난다.

영어초록

New Testament scholarship in general, have been dominated by historical concerns, clarified in recent years by social-science perspectives. Another important recent movement, however, has focused on literary concerns, that is, an emphasis on the text itself rather than the community or social milieu out of which the text came. The first and fundamental presupposition for a Jungian hermeneutic is that religion and religious texts are "not only a sociological and historical phenomenon" but also a function of the "psychological structure of human personality." For Jung the human psyche is the womb of all the arts and sciences, which means that all human expression, including religion, art, and literature have been processed through the human psyche. His goal therefore is to discover psychological facts and processes that before were veiled in symbols and beyond comprehension.
For Jung the biblical symbols are dualistic in nature and it is dominated by opposites, such as light and darkness, spirit and flesh, life and death. In Jungian language, those symbols are phenomena in this world which point to the world above. The world above is the world within, the unconscious, while the world below is the outer world of ego-consciousness. The symbols are expressed in terms of consciousness, but they point beyond themselves to the unconscious, so that the two may be integrated and the individual might experience wholeness. From Jung's perspective, the purpose of symbols, archetypal images, and myths within the ecomomy of the psyche is to correct the courses of the psyche when it has become one-sided or adopts a false attitude.
Jung argued that we must have the light of life in order that we might not be swallowed up in the darkness of unconscious. But if we identify so completely with the light, we lose touch with our own darkness and project it onto others, particularly those of a different race, gender, religion, socio-economic class, or political party. Jesus can only be a symbol of the Self if he is amplified with other images which can include darkness as well as light, evil as well as goodness. Jesus said that God will send a Paraclete, the Spirit of truth, that will lead us into all truth. This Spirit is with us and in us, emerging from the unconscious to bring us to wholeness.
Jung's principal argument with orthodox Christianity was over its refusal to acknowledge the shadow in the deity and the consequent demonizing of the shadow in our own psyche. In order for a person to move to maturity, or what Jung called "individuation", one must bring consciousness into dialogue with the unconscious and acknowledge his shadow.
