율곡의 윤리사상에 관한 북한의 선행연구 비판적 고찰 (A Critical Review on the Previous Study on Yulgok’s Ethical Ideology in North Korea)

초록

본 논문에서는 율곡의 윤리사상에 관한 북한의 선행연구를 비판적으로 살펴보고, 향후 남북한 연구자들이 공동으로 율곡학을 발전시킬 가능성에 대해 탐색해 보았다.
북한의 선행연구를 살펴보면, 율곡의 윤리사상에 실천성과 진보성이 있다고 평가하면서 율곡의 도덕수양론을 새롭게 제기하는 변화가 돋보인다. 그러나 율곡의 윤리사상에 이론적 근간이 되는 인성론을 본연기질일성론(本然氣質一性論)이라고 논하면서 본연과 기질의 관점을 혼용하는 등 논리 체계를 갖추지 못하고 계급투쟁의 정치적 입장에서 해석하는 문제가 있다. 또한 인심도심과 천리인욕에 관한 율곡의 윤리사상을 논하면서 육신의 욕구(欲)와 인심과 인욕(慾)에 관한 개념을 구분하지 못한 채 정치적인 해석을 하거나, 질욕(窒慾)과 과욕(寡欲)의 의미를 혼용하면서 자의적인 해석을 하는 등의 문제도 있다. 다만, 율곡의 윤리사상을 논하면서 인성의 본질이나 도덕적 선악의 문제를 개인의 윤리적 차원에서 나아가 사회의 윤리적 차원에서 탐색하는 시도는 시사하는 바가 있다고 하겠다. 특히 북한 연구자들이 입지(立志)를 사회개혁에 뜻을 두는 공부로 의미를 확장하고 정사(政事)에서 추행(推行)하는 공부로 논리를 전개하면서 도덕수양론의 의미를 새롭게 부여한 것은 탁월한 견해라고 하겠다.
북한 연구자들이 공자 이래 유교의 윤리사상을 계급투쟁의 관점에서 지나치게 정치적으로 해석하는 것은 국내 연구자들이 공감하기 어려워 보인다. 그러나 율곡의 성학 공부론에 담긴 내성(內聖)의 윤리적 의의를 외왕(外王)의 관점에서 탐색하는 북한 연구자들의 학문적 발전은 남북한 연구자들의 공동연구 가능성을 충분히 내포하고 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

In this thesis, the previous study on Yulgok’s ethical ideas in North Korea was critically examined, and the possibility that the North and South Korean researchers can develop Yulgok studies together was explored.
In the precedent studies in North Korea, Yulgok’s ethical ideas have been evaluated as practical and progressive, and there have been some noticeable changes of raising Yulgok’s theory of moral cultivation from a new view point. Yet, they have the problems that they lack a logic system, for example, discussing the theory of human nature that forms the theoretical foundation of Yulgok’s ethical thought as Bonyeongijililseong theory(本然氣質一性論), and therefore using the perspective of the nature mixed with that of disposition, and also interpreting it from the political standpoint of a class struggle. In addition, while discussing Yulgok’s ethical theory about human mind and moral mind(人心道心), the natural principleand human desires(天理人欲), North Korean researchers have had problems of estimating it politically by mixing the concepts of a body’s wants(欲), human mind(人心) and human greed(人慾), or interpreting it arbitrarily without separating out different meanings of stopping greed(窒慾) and little greed(寡欲). Yet, the attitude of discussing and developing the problem of the nature of human mind or moral good and evil from the level of personal morality to that of social ethics when discussing Yulgok’s ethical idea has implication. In particular, it can be evaluated as an excellent opinion that when North Korean researchers suggested a moral self-cultivation theory guaranteeing the practicality of Yulgok’s ethical thoughts, they expanded the meaning of setting an aim in life(立志) as the study to reform the society, and developed the logic of the study as the study to proceed(推行) from the political affairs(政事).
South Korean researchers may not be able to sympathize with the North Korean researchers' politically biased interpretation of Confucian ethical thoughts themselves since Confucius from the standpoint of a class struggle. However, North Korean researchers' academic improvement who have examined the moral meanings of Naeseong(內聖) of Yulgok’s neo-Confuncianist study theory from the viewpoint of Oewang(外王) can be said to have the possibility for North and South Korean researchers to study together.
