생물 해석관점에 나타난 주역인문학—현륙(莧陸)과 석서(鼫鼠)의 동식물 해석 사례 중심— (Biological Humanities sought in I Ching)

초록

이 글은 “『주역』 상징어의 의미변천에 대한 문화사적 연구” 프로젝트의 연속 기획의 하나로서, 『주역』경문의 생물 관련 물상(物象)에 대한 주석의 변천 사례를 통해 상징성의 문화적 상대성을 분석하여 주역학을 폭넓은 의미의 인문학으로 재해석하고자 한 논문이다.
기본적으로 홑괘(單卦)는 8개의 범주에 따라 분류된 각각의 대상을 단독적으로 지시하지만, 겹괘(重卦)의 단계가 되면 64개의 상황에 따라 새롭게 형성된 상하의 관계, 호응의 관계, 각 지위에 따른 변화의 관계 등 복잡한 관계망의 형성과 함께 홑괘의 지시대상들이 복잡하게 얽혀 새로운 상이 창출된다. 겹괘에 등장하는 복합 상은 팔괘 각각의 상을 온전히 보전하기도 하지만, 전혀 다른 상으로 전화하기도 한다. 여기에 더해 주석자의 해석 관점에 따라 전혀 다른 사물로 인식되기도 한다.
본 논문은 이러한 역사(易詞)의 상징성을 동물과 식물 각각의 사례를 가지고 통시적으로 그 변화 양상을 검토하였다. 역사(易詞)의 상징성을 보편과 특수라는 해석 관점에 따라 조망하면서, 상징성의 시공간적 함의와 역사(易詞) 해석을 둘러싼 상징성의 차별적 변화 양상을 살펴보았다.
해석 관점의 차이는 시대와 공간에 따라 현격해지며, 주석자의 신분과 정치적 성향에 따라서도 달라진다. 해석자의 관점에는 그가 속해 있는 특수한 역사와 문화가 녹아 있게 마련이다. 따라서 역사(易詞)의 의미 변천에 대한 문화사적 접근이 가능하다. 역학은 한대에서 위진시대로 넘어가며 전변하고, 수당시대, 송명시대, 원대와 청대에 각각 다른 양상을 띤다. 특히 원대와 청대에는 역상의 상징성이 다른 시대와는 매우 다른 모습을 보인다.
홑괘(팔괘)의 상징뿐만 아니라 그것들이 중첩되어 만들어지는 겹괘(64괘)의 상징들도 해석 관점의 차이가 존재하고 사조별 의미의 변천이 있다. 384개 역사 전체에 등장하는 물상들은 각 주석자만의 독특한 시대정신을 담고 있는 것이다. 해석자의 관점에 따라 전쟁의 상이 될 수도 있고, 평화의 상이 될 수도 있다. 대인의 장쾌한 상이 될 수도 있고, 소인이 갈구하는 희망의 상이 될 수도 있다. 역사(易詞)를 독해할 때 사전의 고정적 의미에 얽매이지 않고, 전체 문맥을 따라 이해해야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 날다람쥐의 생태적 특징을 잔뜩 설명해 놓고 번역어는 생쥐라고 하는 경우처럼 전혀 엉뚱한 언어가 되는 것이다.
동일한 역사(易詞)의 한 물상을 동물로도 식물로도 또는 전쟁과 평화로도 해석하는 각각의 해석 관점에 대한 이해를 통해 역학이 오랜 기간 동아시아에서 누려왔던 다양한 인문학적 콘텐츠를 활성화시킬 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This article is one of the continuous projects of the “The Study of Culture and History that involve changes of inner meaning of Symbols in the I Ching: Focusing on the ideological Origins of the Symbolism in the I Ching of Jeong Yak-yong” project, and aims to reinterpret Yi-ology as a wide-ranging humanities by analyzing the cultural relativity of symbolism through the case of annotations on biological objects in the I Ching scriptures.
Basically, the Single-Gua(8 Trigrams) instructs each object classified according to eight categories, but at the stage of the double-Gua(64 Hexagrams), a new image is created by complicated network formation, such as the newly formed upper and lower relationship, the response relationship, and the relationship of change according to each position. The complex statues that appear in the double-Gua completely preserve each of the eight-Gua statues, but they are also changed to completely different statues. In addition, it is also recognized as a completely different object depending on the commentator’s interpretation point of view.
This paper reviewed the change pattern with the case of each animal and plant for the symbolism of this I Ching scriptures. While looking at the symbolism of I Ching scriptures according to the interpretation perspective of universality and speciality, the spatiotemporal implications of symbolism and the discriminatory changes in symbolism surrounding the interpretation of I Ching scriptures were examined.
The difference in interpretation perspective varies according to the times and space, and also depends on the status and political orientation of the commentator. From the interpreter's point of view, the special history and culture to which he belongs are always melted. Therefore, a cultural and historical approach to the transformation of the meaning of I Ching scriptures is possible. Yi-ology change from Han period to the Wei-Jin period, and it takes on different patterns in the Sui-Tang period, Song-Ming period, Yuan period and Qing period. In particular, in Yuan period and Qing period, the symbolism of I Ching scriptures is very different from other times.
Not only the symbols of the 8 Trigrams but also the symbols of the 64 Hexagrams created by overlapping them have differences in interpretation perspectives and changes in the meaning of each trend. The statues that appear throughout 384 statements contain the unique zeitgeist of each interpreter. Depending on the interpreter's point of view, it can be an image of war or a statue of peace. It can be an image of noble person's future or a statue of hope that lowly person craves. When reading I Ching scriptures, you should not be bound by the fixed meaning of the dictionary, but should be understood according to the entire context. Otherwise, it becomes a completely wrong language, such as explaining the ecological characteristics of a flying squirrel and translating it as a mouse.
Through an understanding of each interpretation perspective that interprets an object of the same I Ching scriptures as an animal, plant, or war and peace, various humanistic contents that Yi-ology has enjoyed for a long time in East Asia can be activated.
